What are some high-resolution re-analysis datasets that I can use to plot atmospheric blocking patterns like those seen in the Greenland blocking?
-
For a class project, I'd like to plot something whose resolution is like this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2013/03/21/record-blocking-patterns-fueling-extreme-washington-d-c-march-weather/ I'd like to see the pressure anomalies in the region associated with Hurricane Sandy, since I heard that Hurricane Sandy owed its unique direction due to atmospheric blocking. I'd also like to see if atmospheric blocking in the Atlantic was also partially responsible for the March 2012 Heat Wave. The [NCEP/DOE re-analysis](http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/cgi-bin/GrADS.pl?dataset=NCEP%2FDOE+AMIP-II+Reanalysis+(Reanalysis-2)&DB_did=61&file=%2FDatasets%2Fncep.reanalysis2%2Fsurface%2Fpres.sfc.1979.nc+pres.sfc.%25y4.nc+49676&variable=pres&DB_vid=1470&DB_tid=36493&units=Pascals&longstat=Individual+Obs&DB_statistic=Individual+Obs&stat=&lat-begin=25N&lat-end=90.00N&lon-begin=150W&lon-end=0W&dim0=time&year_begin=2012&mon_begin=Oct&day_begin=26&hour_begin=00+Z&year_end=2012&mon_end=Oct&day_end=26&hour_end=18+Z&X=lon&Y=lat&output=plot&bckgrnd=white&use_color=on&fill=lines&cint=&range1=&range2=&scale=100&maskf=%2FDatasets%2Fncep.reanalysis2%2Fgaussian_grid%2Fland.sfc.gauss.nc&maskv=Land-sea+mask&submit=Create+Plot+or+Subset+of+Data) doesn't have a resolution that's good enough for what I want. The [NCEP Reanalysis data](http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/cgi-bin/GrADS.pl?dataset=NCEP+Reanalysis+Daily+Averages+Surface+Level&DB_did=33&file=%2FDatasets%2Fncep.reanalysis.dailyavgs%2Fsurface%2Fpres.sfc.1948.nc+pres.sfc.%25y4.nc+23848&variable=pres&DB_vid=675&DB_tid=37264&units=Pascals&longstat=Mean&DB_statistic=Mean&stat=&lat-begin=0N&lat-end=90.00N&lon-begin=100W&lon-end=0W&dim0=time&year_begin=2012&mon_begin=Oct&day_begin=26&year_end=2012&mon_end=Oct&day_end=26&X=lon&Y=lat&output=plot&bckgrnd=white&use_color=on&fill=fill&cint=&range1=&range2=&scale=175&maskf=%2FDatasets%2Fncep.reanalysis.dailyavgs%2Fsurface%2Fland.nc&maskv=Land-sea+mask&submit=Create+Plot+or+Subset+of+Data) isn't good either. So then... what could I look for?

Answer:
Highest resolution ones are the ERA-interim and MERRA. https://climatedataguide.ucar.edu/climate-data/era-interim https://climatedataguide.ucar.edu/climate-data/nasa-merra I would personally recommend ERA-Interim.
