Can the iphone be used on the verizon network?

iPhone 5: How does the coverage and quality of reception of AT&T and Verizon compare in San Francisco and New York?

• September 2012: It's typically been common knowledge that Verizon's network is stronger within the city but things are always changing. I'm tired of the poor AT&T network coverage in the city of San Francisco (weak signal, no signal, dropped calls, etc.) and I'm considering switching to Verizon with the iPhone 5. But in the last year or so, my boyfriend's Android phone on the Verizon network seems to be generally slower, weaker, and dropping coverage more than it used to. Is Verizon Yahoo  network still considered generally better in SF? Or are San Franciscans simply smartphone hogs who overwhelm both networks?

  I am on an iPhone 4s on Verizon, my fiancée is on an iPhone 4 on AT&T. Consistently, I have more bars and better reception. I also get far fewer dropped calls. I primarily am in downtown, SOMA, Inner Richmond.
