How much do Android App Contractors make per hour?

  • I know that it's highly publicized that iOS contract developers can charge anywhere between $100-$150/hr, but what would the general to upper level rates be for Android. The reason for this is that while I love Android and it's momentup, are the going rates for Android significantly less than iOS? I would think that Android would probably pay more because it's much more difficult to deal with the mess when developing with Android

  • Answer:

This is fairly easy to figure out. Contractors have a similar market value to full time employees, except that they have to pay for insurance and other business costs. According to http://itjobswatch.co.uk the average annual salary for a UK-based Android developer is between £50-60,000 GBP, or approximately $100,000. Some back of the napkin math says that an employee actually costs approximately 1.5x what they make when you take into consideration the cost of office space, insurance, pension, office supplies etc. So a contractor doing the same job would earn $150,000. To figure out the hourly earnings is simply a matter of dividing this by the number of weeks per year they will work (48 working weeks with 4 weeks for sick days and holidays) then by how many hours per week they work (40hours) so we get this: $150,000 / 48 / 40 = $78 per hour on average. A quick glance at sites like Dice confirm this: http://Dice.com Where contractors are often offered 100-150$ per hour. Also bearing in mind there is a difference depending upon where in the world you are working from. With that all said, the skills for Android development are no less technical than iOS, but they were for a time far less niche. iOS developers could for a long time charge a premium because objective-c programming was fairly rare, but while that is no longer the case, there is still to some degree a premium for iOS development. I'd say there's still a 10-15% premium on such work. To answer your question more succinctly: to fully answer your question, one would need to know where in the world you are and whether you aim to work remotely or as an in-situ contractor/consultant. However, $100-150 per hour is a good starting point.
