How can I improve the battery life on my device?

How does upgrading a OS improve battery life of your phone?

I have recently upgraded my phone to Jelly bean 4.3 and I can see the significant improvement in battery life. I want to know what does developers change not only in context of android but in general to improve the battery life.

Marginally. There are some improvements from 1.6 -> 4.0

Not necessary that with each upgrade you will save battery life. But in the case of the Android L upgrade, already the Nexus 5 users (myself included) have noticed significant battery life improvements in the developer previews of the Android L that were released, this is bcoz of a new project Google took called as 'Project Volta'.
