How does upgrading a OS improve battery life of your phone?

I have recently upgraded my phone to Jelly bean 4.3 and I can see the significant improvement in battery life. I want to know what does developers change not only in context of android but in general to improve the battery life.

Not necessary that with each upgrade you will saveĀ battery life. But in the case of the Android L upgrade, already the Nexus 5 users (myself included) have noticed significant battery life improvements in the developer previews of the Android L that were released, this is bcoz of a new project Google took called as 'Project Volta'.
