Who has a bright chance in becoming the next Prime minister of India in 2014?
-
As the Lok Sabha elections are nearing, who deserves to be the next PM? Congress with its governance involving lot of scams, the BJP which faces a lot of difficulties in settling issues within the party, Arvind kejirwal's ambitious IAC which does not have a good leader to guide through, where is India heading to ? What will be India's future particularly after the global crisis and economic crunch situation that it has faced recently?

Answer:
Thanks for the A2A. You asked the question as "who WILL" and not "who SHOULD". So i will answer on the same line. Looking at the current political scenario and past experiences, the next PM will most probably be someone from the UPA. I wont name anyone here as to who will be their candidate for the PMs post as I have a serious fear it could even be a donkey dressed as a human! The simple reason for the UPA to win being that the ones who earlier voted for the UPA will continue to be loyal. The other voters will be divided amongst the NDA and others. The same thing happened in the Punjab elections in Punjab in 2012. You can put a pessimist tag on me but this is the harsh reality!

From The Congress, I would say Chidambaram - the Congress sees him as someone who is efficient and will get the job done , AK Anthony (incorruptible but slow decision maker), Salman Khurshid, ( It would be good for India- if we have a Muslim as PM), Meira Kumar and maybe sometime in the future Shashi Tharoor and Prithviraj Chavan. I would also like to say Rahul Gandhi is not the party's PM candidate, we have had no indication from the man himself that he is going to lead the party anytime soon, forget run for PM in 2014. He is clearly more involved in building youth congress and might get involved in the party.

In good probability, Manmohan Singh will continue for another term. Reasoning: It will be very difficult for any party to win absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, and if at all anyone stands a chance at that, its the Congress. For a coalition government, it will be almost necessary to have either of the leading parties, Congress or BJP as part of it. With many parties averse to partnering with the BJP, including the now-looking-strong Samajwadi Party, it would have to be Congress. And, even if they fall significantly behind their currently Lok Sabha tally, they would still be having enough seats to command the Prime Minister post. So, we settle at a Congress candidate for PM. Now, Rahul Gandhi is quite immature, and in his own words is not ready to take ministerial positions anytime soon. Sonia Gandhi, did she have to take up the post, she would have done it much earlier. So, the choice remains between Manmohan Singh and maybe Pranab Mukherjee. The former here is the incumbent, senior of the two, as well as a trusted lieutenant of Sonia Gandhi, so definitely he stands the maximum chance. Alternatively, like the media, I too would love to see BJP pitching in with Narendra Modi as Prime Ministerial Candidate, and eventually Prime Minister.

Nitish kumar- Not because I like him but because he has positioned himself perfectly before the upcoming election. He has proven himself in Bihar not only as successful chief-minister but also as a secular leader. By openly opposing Modi, he has made himself more attractive. If BJP goes into the poll without Modi as prime minister, it would not garner its 100%. All the other parties would not come behind BJP in any case and look out for an alternative outside BJP. Nitish kumar looks a great bet.

Although political conditions are difficult to predict, I am trying to elaborate few names with favorable conditions. Rahul Gandhi - you might question his leadership qualities, but his tag of secularism gives him great advantage when it comes to finding collision partners. If you take it for face value UP has major say in deciding PM. And of course Maya and Mulayam are sentinel of secularism. Their number might differ after election but anyway they will get whole UP leaving few seats for congress and BJP. Narendra Modi - At this point there is no doubt that he will be BJP candidate.(Though it will be foolish for BJP if it doesn't do that) He might lead BJP to get 185+ seats. Then he will be able to woo other parties for anti-congressism and in the name of corruption. But his autocratic nature and communal identity is some sort of deal breaker for others. Jaya and Mamata will be happy to support him.(btw I am doubtful of Mamata she has significant muslim vote bank) Arun Jaitly - He is the only person who can be a dark horse in this race. He likes to play in background but he is playing his cards safely. As he comes from Rajyasabha route he has little acceptance with core hindutva supporters(not being true leader) but if Narendra Modi is not going to be PM, he has certain edge over Sushama Swaraj being deplomatic and good at negotiations with others. Sushma Swaraj - She can be winner if Narendra Modi is out of race. She is Versatile leader and people often relate her to Atal Bihari Vajpeyi due to her oratary skills. JDU would be very happy for her and might find other partners for NDA if she is to be a leader. Jaya, Sushma and Mamata will make good fight for five year. L K Advani - if fight within BJP becomes hectic he can be common choice. There are other leaders in BJP like Shivaraj Chouhan, Manohar Parrikar, Rajnath Singh, MM Joshi. And proximity of any of one to RSS might be their lucky card. Others: Politics is a game of possibilities. Collision comprised of Nitishkumar, Mamata Banerji, Navin Patnaik, Mulayam can come to Power with support from congress or BJP. Mulayam Singh Yadav is trying hard this time, he can be dark horse here, JDU can support him and even Akali Dal. At this time there is no support for Mayawati but she is just a good politician and can make anyone PM with hard bargain. Sharad Pawar also has friends among all parties if it becomes a game of numbers, he will come out with an equation. There is no competition within congress but if congress loses badly and still in position to get partners Rahul might want to do it by Sonia way. There are many leaders in congress for this. P. Chidambaram - serious leader but may not suit Rahul. Digvijay Singh - believe it or not congress can do nasty work. He has got plenty of appeal among minorities. Meera kumar - She is a woman and a dalit. This makes her good candidate. If Rahul is to rule anyway why not earn goodwill from people! She holds a great respect among all parties and no one can oppose her. There are others like A K Anthony, Sushil Shinde. Final Comments: Rahul Gandhi or Narendra Modi. If there is hindutva wave Rahul will be a loser. But there is doubt that Narendra Modi might not be able to handle cat fights within collision.

Does it matter who is PM? In a parliamentary system like India, a PM/CM derives his strength from the strength of his MPs/MLAs who in turn derive their strength from their own support base. Even though Modi is a strong person and has an absolute majority in gujarat, even he could not afford to sack Purushotam or Anandiben for their corruption because of their Koli and Patel vote bases respectively. It is high time we stop voting on the faith of PM/CM faces, and start voting for the best local candidates - the way our system was designed to work and the only way we can clean up the system. Till then, no Manmohan Singh or Modi can do anything even if they themselves dont take money.

Most of the answers here are from surveys or their own intellectual thinking. The question is who has a bright chance of becoming prime minister? If UPA again comes in power which very likely will happen however we oppose it.. Then as we all know Sonia Gandhi will want a spineless PM who follows her orders. And in this context Manmohan Singh has done a wonderful job so he stil has chance or maybe any other idiot who follows Mrs. Gandhi's command.Maybe Shinde or Narayan Sami or Gulam Nabi Azad. He sure will not be a very known name or a intellectual.Even Antony has a chance. It all depends on Mrs. Gandhi. If somehow NDA comes in power Sushma Swaraj is a very plausible name. Third front or Both NDA or UPA not getting majority will make a very messy situation . Which will make both Mayawati and Mulayam verry powerful. This time elections will be really interesting.

Since the question is "who will be" and not "who should be" there are three distinct cases. 1. BJP can project Narendra Modi and he has a very good chance of reaching near the magic number. 2. If BJP projects any other leader it will be UPA who might win. Under such circumstances UPA will either want some X Gandhi to be the PM. Rahul cant become PM because of same technicalities as that of his mother. UPA cant get their own dummy president hence he will have to stay away. Sonia will not project anyone with spine so Pranav Mukharjee too is out. Sonia will search for some meek and man-with-no-spine person like Manmohan Singh or Pratibha Patil in that case. 3. If neither BJP nor UPA gets good numbers their might be a thrid front which will have some other nincompoop regional leader projected to national stage.

Narendra Modi anyday He's most popular CM and best candidate for PM looking at other option like Rahul Gandhi (Buddhu) and the silent man Manmohan Singh and retarded Mulayam Singh Yadav Facts that make Modi ji best choice :- Under his leadership, the Bharatiya Janata Party won the 2012 Gujrat State Assembly Elections and he was chosen to serve for a fourth term as chief minister. creating the environment for the high economic growth in Gujarat making it most developed state in India with ever increasing Industrial as well as Agricultural productivity pro-development rather than involving in caste and minority appeasement even Muslims of Gujarat vote for NaMo Speaker and strong leader which India needs now Won the award of best CM for 3 times in 5 years plus various awards finally it's will of the people of India. They are tired of this shitty congress rule, all the scams the inflation and reservation and hollow secularism has shattered India's stable socio-economic conditions that were prospering during time of Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji and NaMo is best successor and closed match People's favourite. If we have direct election like USA then he'll be PM for life
