How do I build, host and integrate a Facebook Application with a mobile application?

• Im currently half way through my java class and would like to build a Facebook application that will integrate with an iOS application. Assuming I have a pretty good grasp of java and objective C (Stanford's iTunes University videos) by December, how should I approach this project? I assume step one is to design both the iOS and Facebook applications separately containing the features I wish to incorporate but then what? Should I start with the Facebook app first or the ios app? Do I need to learn any database programming or will the above classes cover enough of that? Also does facebook and iOS offer hosting for their applications or do I need to use a third party such as Amazon's Web Service? Please include and useful references, resources, books or videos that will help me accomplish this. Thanks much!   :-)
