How can one improve their transfer application to competitive universities in the Boston area?
-
My girlfriend would like to transfer to a college/university in Boston. She will be applying after her sophomore year in spring 2014 for admission in Fall 2014. Her second semester as a freshman she did not do well academically. Pending she does well academically next year, what else can she do to improve her chances of acceptance to the schools she wants to transfer into? She has had several internships (non-profit and law). What would you recommend she does? Talk to admissions counselors? Take advantage of any legacy relationships (she has an uncle that attended Boston University and great grandparents that donated land to a prestigious university in the area? Will that give any strength to her application? Although her cumulative GPA may not be where it needs to be, will significant improvement be enough? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you. Additional info:I am moving to Boston this fall (just graduated, now starting work), but she will be continuing school here in Maryland. She visited Boston recently to check out the city/schools and decided that she wants to pursue this. She is interested primarily in Boston University and Boston College. She is exploring Wellesely, Tufts, Northeastern, and UMass. Are any of these options realistic and how can she be a strong transfer applicant? Thanks again!

Answer:
My advice would be that, first, get the GPA to a somewhat competitive level since this is a big screening thing (at least over 3.5). Once that is done, I would advise one to do as I did when doing exactly what she is trying to do: think big and think different. Universities around here (especially NEU) want globally minded people with diverse backgrounds. They want you to want to change the world. They want you to be multi-ethnic and have a unique life experience and drive. Set big goals and go for them. Try and get specific, but not too specific, in your essay. I did this and somehow got into a good school with a ify GPA. Hope it helps and good luck.

I transferred into BC from UConn. I was accepted off the waitlist. Therefore if your girlfriend gets waitlisted, don't assume she will not get in. With that introduction out of the way, transferring into a college is mostly about an applicant's numbers (GPA and SAT score). The transfer process allows a college to select students who have already proven that they can excel in a college environment, and will continue to do so in their school (then hopefully the transfer applicant can become successful alumnus and donate big money). That said, your girlfriend can do two things to improve her odds of getting into a school (besides working hard to get the best GPA she can). First, write an essay targeted towards a particular school and explain why she wants to attend that school. For example, BC believes in "women and men in the service of others." If your girlfriend can write a compelling essay of why she embodies that motto and explains why she wants to go to BC, then BC may overlook other flaws in her application. This is true of the other schools, too. Second she should create personal relationship with someone in the admissions office of each school (if possible). A friend of mine befriended a George Washington University School of Law admission's officer. My friend didn't have the GPA and LSAT score to be a top applicant, but she was accepted off the waitlist. The GW admission's officer knew her and knew should accept an offer from GW Law. The school wanted to ensure that whomever they gave an offer off the waitlist would accept it. And she did. The moral of the story is that their is great value in having someone in the admission office knowing who your girlfriend is and pulling for her.
