Boston Marathon Terrorist Attacks (April 2013): What do Americans think about the BU setting up a scholarship to honor LU Lingzi?
-
We all know that there were other people died in this accident. The BU set a scholarship for her,was that too much? How did the government honor the other people died in the accident?

Answer:
As a local and as a BU alum, I thought it was very fitting to set up a scholarship in her name. She was a young woman of great talent and promise who came to BU to study and became caught up in a terrible act of terrorism. She is the type of student that BU wants to attract, and it is a good thing for us to remember her.

I'm a professional in Boston. I work in medicine. My significant other was very close to the scene as the bombs were going off. At the time I was over at a clinical laboratory in Woburn, and I had to tell my significant other, "Listen, wait a while for things to cool down, and then please come home. Avoid crowds, trash cans, backpacks, or anything, be aware of your surroundings and just get home safely." I don't think it's too much to have a scholarship in this young woman's name. Aside from how horrible the event was in the first place, I will admit that I thought it was especially horrible when I read that a Chinese student had been killed. To me, that was collateral damage. We have many, many different students and professionals hailing from all over the world in Boston, and when I hear "terrorist attack," the presumption is that the terrorists are targeting the individuals in the area as a means to provoke the government to take some sort of aggressive action that will result in definite inconvenience to the general population which had already been targeted by the terrorist attack, and perhaps result in inconvenience to the terrorists themselves. Lu Lingzi was a young student. She was someone who worked very hard to come to study in the United States at a top-tier university. She was killed when terrorists attacked Americans in Boston (which was pretty foolish; Boston is strong because we're not only Americans, we're people coming from different areas of the whole world). We have ways to honor our friends who were killed in these attacks, but it is somehow more difficult to say to Lu Lingzi's family, "You trusted your daughter with us... and we're sorry." The best way we have to do that is sometimes to create a scholarship so that other students can complete what Lu Lingzi set out to do.
