How do I start a consulting business with very little start-up capital?

How do you start a (strategy) consulting business - in Southeast Asia?

  • I've been toying with the idea of starting a consulting firm doing strategy or what not. But I'm unsure what kind of value-add would a consultant with just 2 years of consulting experience (despite from a brand-name consulting firm) bring to the table and if there's market for it in Southeast Asia. Or in general, how should I even test the demand in the market? I definitely can't go for clients that my current firm has already been in negotiation with... (thus posting anonymously)

  • Answer:

If you already have experience as a consultant your half way there. Figure out your strategy on how you are going to create value for other strategies and constantly mould and re work your strategy to enhance your clients. Try to work your way out of your current position without having to sign a no-compete clause. Then you can compete for the clients you have already worked with.  So long as you haven't signed any documents saying you can't. And if they ask you to do so, tell them that you won't sign because you intend on competitive. In this case they may offer you a raise, or try to take you to court. Consult a lawyer if that is the case. Or ask a couple of questions on here in a different way.
