Is Sri Lanka safe as a travel destination?

I am planning a backpacking trip to Sri Lanka in end October/Early November, is it recommended to travel alone in Sri Lanka for a girl?

  • I am thinking maybe 10 days, will they be enough? What are the places I must visit? I really want to do this trip alone as a solo adventure, its kind of my dream, but I want to be practical, will it be safe for a single female to backpack the country by herself. Also what are the things I should keep in mind before setting foot in Sri Lanka. Thanks!

  • Answer:

I traveled around Sri Lanka for two weeks in 2013.  It's a beautiful place with friendly people.  While I haven't seen a single western girl travel around the country solo during that time, there were plenty of girls who traveled with another female companion. I can't opine what this means for the perceived safety, but I never felt unsafe there. As far as my top places to visit: Ella  (bike ride through the hills and in general cool off) Nuwara Elia  (tea plantations, everywhere!) Galle   (historic Dutch settlement and expensive tourist shops) Mirissa  (beach) Anuradhapura  (hot, very hot, but stunning architecture) Sigiriya  (can't describe it any better than this photo) Use the rail road to get to Ella and Nuwara Elia.  That's a worthy experience all on its own.

As travel consultant, I do not recommend solo travel in Sri Lanka specially for a girl who is willing to visit very first time.  Travel with your friend will be better. And if you prefer, travel with a chauffeur guide who was registered with Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. If you need any assist feel free to contact me.

I've seen girls do it. But be careful in remote areas. As with most things in life, your approach will dictate what is likely to happen.

I won't recommend a solo female to go backapcking in Sri Lanka. As a Sri Lankan, I think it's unsafe.

10 days is more than enough. Try visiting places such as Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Kandy, Horton Plains and even the south coast of the country. You will encounter many interesting sites and will have the opportunity to stay at a number of retreats. Kandy would be a good place to begin your journey and The Secret Kandy a good hotel to stay at.
