How can you make the most of your college experience?

What all things I should keep in mind before selecting the college in case I don't make through the IIMs or some other high ranking colleges? Please suggest colleges which are worth joining after an year of job experience in India?

  • I am a final year student pursuing B.Tech- CSE from VIT University and got placed in Ericsson. Next year in July I will have almost 1 year of job experience.

Kindly think a lot as to what you want from an MBA! Why are you doing an MBA? Try and answer the question honestly! Then, go about prioritizing which college has what you want.. Considering your profile, there is no point in doing an MBA (PGDM) from colleges other than IIM's and the few other old, reputed institutes like XLRI, SP Jain, FMS, IIFT!! If you are looking for a huge shift to say, core Finance or core Marketing, then you are better off doing your MBA with as less work exp as possible, considering the job market. If you want to get into operations, consulting, product management or any other similar roles a few years of solid work ex would do you a world of good. What roles are you looking for, whether such profiles are being offered in the college you get admits from & what are the kind of people that get those roles are the things you ought to consider! One important factor which is often overlooked is the location of the institution and whether it is close to a major city! Include that in your analysis. Bottomline: Every insti has a lot of pros and cons and the most important thing is knowing clearly what you want!

The opportunity cost... It is not very difficult to calculate when you already have a job in hand... With fees of B-Schools soaring the sky, this is the most important thing you should consider if the investment of your time and money is going to be offset by the returns you get say 10 years down the line. Many seniors might say that it will always offset the investment but hey, it is not difficult to quantify this and you sure shall. Once you get a clarity on that, the rest are just regular tid bits which have easy answers when considering for the next step
