Will Nigeria's population exceed that of the United States?
-
This news source (not necessarily the most accurate) states that by 2050, Nigeria's population will exceed that of the US:http://www.newser.com/story/comments/171070/texas-sized-nigeria-will-have-more-people-than-us-by-2050.html?utm_source=syn&utm_medium=goognews&utm_campaign=chan3_feed&google_editors_picks=true Will this occur? Or is this simply extrapolating the population data?

Answer:
Odds are that yes, Nigeria's population will overtake that of the United States eventually. When? It's anyone's guess. Most projections used to show that Nigeria will overtake the US between 2050 and 2065. But now that birth rates are no longer declining as fast as they were predicted to, Nigeria's growth rates look as though they will continue to stay above 2%. That means that Nigeria could overtake the US as early as 2040. The story that you have cited in the question details actually links to a http://www.guardian.co.uk/global-development/2013/jun/13/nigeria-larger-population-us-2050 story, and by having a quick Google session it seems that http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/07/16/the-amazing-surprising-africa-driven-demographic-future-of-the-earth-in-9-charts/ also reported on the new figures that were released by the UN on world population day. Previously, given the data we had two years ago, this is how we thought that populations of the USA and Nigeria would grow, from 1950 to 2050: With the following growth rates: But now that we have new data that takes into account the slower drop in birth rates worldwide, over the same time period we now have the following population figures: With the following growth rate figures: So what's the difference? Here's the two sets of graphs together: And the growth figures: As you can see, the latest figures show that Nigeria is certainly set to overtake the US, and now probably this side of 2050 rather than the other side. 450m people in a country the size of Texas. Crazy. Anyway, so how big is the gap going to become? Quite big: Nigeria should be sitting at around 910m by 2100. The USA will probably limp to just over 450m. I agree somewhat with the first line on answer, but will rather change the word "will" to "may" 1. Nigerian population will eventually drop up once the standard of living improves. 2. He didnt take into account US big advantage on population, its the first choice for immigration by most people in the world. Sure, i will regard the news as extrapolation because it is based on current data which has no chance of staying constant.

According to Wikipedia, the US will still be slightly ahead in 2050. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_past_and_future_populationNigeria's growth will likely slow rapidly, but it is hard to tell when.Already Nigerian Christians are complaining that Nigerian Muslims still have higher birth rates.

Nigeria has a population of 170 million with an annual growth rate of 2%, or 30 years to double. The US population is 311 million with annual growth of about 0.75%. On a phone, but one could plot somewhat inaccurate line charts which would show Nigeria overtaking the US at *some* point, assuming growth rates don't decline in Nigeria or rise in the US. Growth rates include immigration, by the way.

Nigeria is Africa's most populated nation, has a population that is rapidly growing. By 2050, it is expected that Nigeria's population will exceed the United States. In 2016, Nigeria has over 182 million people. The US in 2015 was just over 250 million. So, that gives you an idea where Nigeria is going. There's also no law as regards birthrate in Nigeria; an average couple in Nigeria has 4 children which is already a sign of future "Doubling" of the population.Ref:
