With experience, I can safely say that there's no better way than actually listening to all types of Indian music that you can get your hands on. Figure out the characteristics, etc. If you're a musician of some sorts, then you can also try figuring out scales, chord patterns, etc. Listening by ear, learning by ear is truly the only way to learn any kind of musical style. Therefore, your best online source would be to YouTube songs/musical pieces.

Yes. Sitting in front of Guru and learning from him is a great way of learning. But for preliminary lessons, definitely you can go for videos and Skype sessions. That works perfectly fine.  :)

I came across this website called http://bmusician.com.. They teach online music courses in more than 6 genres including Indian Carnatic and Hindustani Music and I also found that some top musicians like Guitar Shylu and Prapancham Ravindran are teaching there.. They offer easy class rescheduling which I felt would be quite helpful as I am working too !! I have subscribed for it as I wanted to continue my intermediate classical guitar classes.. Guitar Shylu will be teaching there, he is a pioneer in Indian classical guitar(googled).  They are launching in a couple of weeks, may be u can try out :)
