What are some non-technical and behavioral questions I should prepare for before appearing for a Software Engineering job interview?
-
EDIT : I'm in my 4th year of engineering(CS). And I'll be appearing for my campus placement interviews for the role of SDE and SDET in the coming few months. We would also have consultancy companies arriving during the placement season, and hence I suppose, I would apply as a Consultant in those companies.

Ive succeeded in every job interview that I have ever attended to heres a list of tips for you. 1) the interviewer to at least some extend will ask you precision model/ business model questions. This means that they will attempt to solicit details about generic answers you give. For example if you say that you loved your last job they will ask you what specifically you loved about it or what part of it you loved the most. 2) each of your answers need to highlight a quality about yourself without actually saying it. For example saying "I think its important to meet goals and achieve results because then day by day Im becoming a better person" is much better than saying "Im hard working" 3) the person interviewing you is a person not a robot. Interact with them as another person exuding confidence while being fun and interesting 4) frame the interview in your mind as an opportunity to work with them not for them. If you find what the company is doing intriguing and exciting, then show them that. 5) use open body language: do not put your hands behind your back or in your pockets, or cross your arms

few questions worth mentioning are: The most important question: Tell me about yourself. Where do you see yourself five years down the line? What do you expect when you join the company? What makes you quit your current job? or to put it in other words what makes you look for a job change? (This is one very important question) What major challenges have you faced in life and how have you tackled it? What are your strengths? What did you work on in your previous companies? These are very important non-technical questions which I have experienced in the 5 interviews I have appeared for in my life.

Getting your body language right in an interview if both very hard to get right and very important. For me the most important aspects of body language are the way you look, the way speak and the way you conduct yourself. First your body language during entrance should be good. Smile at each one of them making eye contact with each and every one. start with the one who welcomes you. Then move on to all of them. Next HAND SHAKE very important part try to reach out for the pulse with your index finger this will make the bond of shake perfect. I don't know people generally don't prepare for these kind of questions, they feel that they are natural at these kind of things.I have two things to say these people. 1.Over Confidence does not help. 2. You lose out making a Better FIRST IMPRESSION Because The very first question of any interview in this world is "TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF" So prepare for this question well, When I was attending for Placement interviews back in my college. I literally had a 100 word, 200 word, 300 word essays written(because some interviewers are just not satisfied with short answers while some others move on seeing you feel comfortable). Most interviewers believe a person who knows where he wants to be So prepare for these type of questions like Where do you want to see yourself in 5/10/20 years? (Prepare for all three) and for college placements frequent questions like Higher Studies?? (You obviously can't say YES but don't say an emphatic NO either try something like its not on my mind or want to support family by start earning. For experienced people important question is always "Why did you leave your previous job?" (Sorry can't help you there but you know why you left the previous job) Finally please make note that there are no wrong answers in these type of questions. They just reveal whether you possess the qualities they are looking for. All the Best. Cheers!!!

-------------------------------------- Remember : The technical interview depends on various parameters, From employer side e.g. job title, responsibility, department, project type, technology type, skills type, years of experience, mind set of interviewer/interviewers, immediate requirements, firm decision for hire-nohire and many more. From candidate side e.g. the way CV (resume) was presented, the way the candidate carried the technical/non-technical discussion and many more ) -------------------------------------- My favorite question is : Please tell me about yourself ? On every job interview its a first question to be asked : âPlease tell me about your selfâ, and From the candidate side If its not prepared well or not well thought of, then it creates some ahh ahh kind of sound and that made the beginning of a interview to more nervous and uncomfortable. If doesn't give right reponse back to the interviewer, then Interviewer need continuous input to understand the candidate and aligned his next level questions..

I think you would get a lot of value out of reading this resource written by Jennifer Loftus (former President of the New York City SHRM chapter) who explains how technical people can impress non-technical HR folks (full disclosure, I work for the company that hosts this article). http://www.infusivesolutions.com/blog/bid/102720/Interviewing-Here-s-How-to-Impress-Non-Technical-HR-Professionals Very thorough and designed to help technical candidates move on to engineers who can better assess your technical fit.
