Who is the Primary Owner of All the Domain Names?

If my sole proprietorship currently using owner's name adds a fictitious name, do I have to change all my business services accounts including domain names, hosting, affiliate accounts etc. to reflect the DBA name as company name right away?

  • I have a sole proprietorship in California and planning to get a DBA (fictitious) name. I have been using my name as business name for multiple domain names, hosting accounts, affiliate accounts and other related business related services accounts. I do have a separate bank account setup though for all my business activity. After I get DBA name assigned and approved, will I need to convert ownership for all my domains and other business related services accounts to the fictitious name, or can I keep using both as I slowly migrate to using DBA name for everything? What about payments being received like affiliate commissions etc.? Do they all have to start going into the new bank account under DBA name right away?

  • Answer:

There is no need to convert anything to the fictitious business name. Once you have the FBN, you get to choose whether and when to use it. It is merely a way to help you establish a business presence under that name rather than a requirement. This answer is not a substitute for professional legal advice....
