Bangalore to Puttaparthi?!!! Roads?!! What are they like?

Why are foot path and roads and drains constantly being paved and repaved in Bangalore?

  • Lots of roads, drains, sewers, sidewalks in (Bangalore/bengaluru) are paved then repaved, dug up and filled and then dug up again. Who is responsible for handing out the contracts and making sure its done properly and in a timely fashion? How do we stop this corruption? Why are'nt investigative reporters using the RTI and tools to un-earth these corrupt officials/contractors? Why are we not following the money trail? Why do we not demand accountability from them. We live in these neighbourhoods. Walk through them everyday, and if these things are in done the neighbourhood is more in demand and property prices would also appreciate more.

  • Answer:

Bangalore is an old city, which is growing exponentially for the past 15 years. Except for the metro construction and general maintenance (unclogging drains/re-tarring roads etc), you will not see much work happening in the older and the developed parts of Bangalore like Jayanagar, Basavangudi, Malleshwaram etc. When the water supply pipes and drainage pipes were installed back then for the newer areas, nobody had predicted, it will grow with this pace. It is common to see apartments in 60x40 sites in these newer areas, this means we have to supply water and remove drainage for 7 to 8 families instead of 1 family for which it was planned. So, we have to change water supply and drainage pipes. But the whole re-piping activity costs a lot and temporary solutions have to be made till funds are released for re-piping. Hence the constant digging-covering-redigging act. BBMP is in charge of handing out these contracts and ensuring they are done in time. Except for bigger projects like flyovers and underpasses ( which gets delayed because someone brings a stay order from the court), most of the projects are finished on time. Although quality and costs are not so honestly stuck to. RTI is for everyone. It costs Rs.10 to file an RTI. You do not have to be an investigative reporter to do it.

Normal working-class people simply do not have the time to run from pillar to post seeking answers using RTI. Even to use RTI, you may have to pay bribe, which, if you refuse, will end up wasting more time. Then you approach RTI commissioner to complain that the resolution time for your query is exceeded and that ends up wasting more time. By this time, road would have been dug up and filled twice :P There are "activists" who spend their time doing only this. But ratio of activists:issues seems to be 1:10000 which is appalling. Everyone knows what is happening. But no one knows how to stop it or improve it or even wants to step into the muck.
