Where to buy tablet for China?
-
Using a tablet in China. Buy here or buy there? We want our family in China to have a tablet PC (mostly for doing video Skype with us). The options are buy here or buy there. My assumption is that the systems you get in China will be tailored for a Chinese market (which is good), with language and app store location and wall charger and everything else working automatically. What about price? I know you can get cheap Chinese tablets, but the quality is so-so. Buying here means we can get a Google Nexus 7" (banned from Chinese stores, it appears). Good idea? Meh idea? Terrible idea?

Answer:
There are many off-brand tablets in China that are substantially cheaper than a Nexus etc that will more than do the job for skyping. The biggest/best brands are Ainol (flagship 7" model currently the "flame"), Cube (flagship U30GT or something like that), and Onda (flagship v712, not as good on battery life as the flame I understand).

If you buy any brand-name item in an official store in China, the price will be inflated by at least 25%. For example, I bought an HP laptop in the US for ~600 dollars; my friend bought the same laptop in China and it cost ~1000 dollars. iPhones and other apple devices are the same. That said, you said you couldn't find the Nexus in stores in China, so this wouldn't apply. If I were you, I'd just go and buy it in the US. I'd be wary of buying any major electronic device like that unofficially; you're better off safe than sorry. You can just include some plug adapters; it should be dual voltage, like any electronic advice these days. Language settings are easy to change, so to me that's a non-issue.

Buy it in Hong Kong.

I agree with Krakus. Everything over there that was name brand was expensive, and I didn't know enough about the off-brands to ensure quality and reliability. A Nexus 7" sounds like an affordable choice. I am jealous that you have a family over there to Skype with.

Ainol gets great reviews from what I've seen. I'm actually kinda lusting after one.

Keep in mind that a Nexus 7 is well-integrated with a bunch of Google services, a lot of which may be inaccessible from China. Devices sold in China, though, will instead work well with local services.
