What are some fun text message games?

Games via text message

  • What are some games that can be played via text message? My best friend is having a tough time and it's been helpful for her (both of us, really) to have distractions sometimes, like playing games via text message. We're looking for more options. Smart phone games are not an option. We've come up with the following options: - 20 Questions - Geography (one person lists a place, say Kansas, and the next person must give a place that starts with the last letter of the place the previous person listed, like South Africa) - Would You Rather - Guess the Lyric/Quote - Ghost - Hangman - Battleship (if we both draw out the boards, not preferred) She much prefers word games over math/logic games. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

My friends and I tell each other stories, each doing one or two sentences, going back and forth. We usually start by agreeing on characters and a plot (for ex, something like "Batman fights zombies! Bonus points if Nightwing shows up!"); often we each end up each taking one character's POV, especially for dialogue.

I made up this game with my niece where I send her the name of anything and she responds, ranking it on a scale of, say, 1-5. The better I "get" her, the higher my score. It helps me learn what she likes (and what she's like). She gets to express her opinions & teach me about herself. (We live far apart). Me: Cheese Her: 1 (eww) Me: Homework Her: 1 (duh) Me: Oil pastels Her: 5! etc. sometimes I tease her by sending lots of things I know she doesn't like, but then I'll send her a bunch of faves.

My friends and I used to have a game where we described a word, and then the other person said, "No, no, that's a..." and then described another word that rhymed with it or was contextually similar. And you just kept the guessing going back and forth. "It's the only mammal that flies." (Bat) "No, that's a rodent related to a mouse." (Rat) "No, it's a pet feline." (Cat) "You mean the fastest mammal?" (Cheetah ... a type of Cat) "No, it's the first name of Tom Hanks' wife, who is also an actress." (Rita, rhymes with Cheetah) You just try to keep it going as long as you can.

A friend and I exchange rhyming text messages. Sometimes we go Princess Bride style, which is great for dragging in the other person against their will ("No more rhymes now, I mean it!" "Anybody want a peanut?"), sometimes we exchange couplets. It's a challenge to try to have a coherent conversation and rhyme. We'll do puns on a theme, too. Pretty easy to get started with someone who likes words and has any sort of competitive streak.

Along the lines of tryniti's suggestion (I had the same thought), Build-a-Title, from Doug Benson's podcast. Someone names a movie: Night of the Living Dead. The next player has to think of another movie that ties in with either the first or last word of the title. So, for example, 30 Days of Night of the Living Dead. 30 Days of Night of the Living Dead Man Walking. You can get kind of loose with it by using the opening/closing syllables as well. And you can play one of two ways--try to build an insanely long title or make it so the next player can't add on.

During a Sherlock phase, my friend and I entertained each other by sending each other text messages in cipher. Nerdy, but fun!

Thanks for all of the suggestions, everyone! I've marked games that we've monkeyed with a bit so far as best answer, but I'm looking forward to trying them all! Word of warning: French Toast can be ridiculously hard. She picked "honey" and we eventually had to stop before someone's battery died. It was quite fun though!
