New ways to say Happy Birthday
-
Can you help me come up with alternative ways to say happy birthday? I'm tired of writing the same old things when I send friends birthday cards/texts/etc. Looking for creative, thoughtful, and/or poetic ways to send someone birthday wishes. Bonus points for literary references or foreign language translations that have a slightly different connotation than "Happy Birthday"

Answer:
I usually write "Happy bidet!" on friends' Facebook walls. It's a little odd, but if they read it out loud, it approximates "b-day." And now it feels even sillier having explained the thought process.

Once a year we celebrate, With stupid hats and plastic plates, The fact that you were able to make Another trip around the sun. And the whole clan gathers round, And gifts and laughter do abound. And we let out a joyful sound And sing that stupid song. Happy birthday! Now you're one year older. Happy birthday! Your life still isn't over. Happy birthday! You did not accomplish much. But you didn't die this year, I guess that's good enough. So let's drink to your fading health, And hope you don't remind yourself, Your chance of finding fame and wealth, Decrease with every year. `Cause if you feel you're doing laps, And eating food and taking naps, And hoping that someday perhaps Your life may hold some cheer. Happy birthday! What have you done that matters? Happy birthday! You're starting to get fatter. Happy birthday! It's downhill from now on. Try not to remind yourself your best years are all gone. If cryogenics were all free, Then you could live like Walt Disney. And live for all eternity, inside a block of ice. But instead your time is set. This is the only life you get. And though it hasn't ended yet, Sometimes you wish it might. Happy birthday! You wish you had more money. Happy birthday! Your life's so sad it's funny. Happy birthday! How much more can you take? But your friends are hungry, so just cut the stupid cake.

Tell them what they mean to you. "Happy birthday! I'm really glad you're in my life. You make me smile every day!" Or something along those lines. It's personal and it means something to both of you.

"Enjoy your Xth trip around the sun!" Bonus: since X is birthday+1, it makes them feel that much older.

This may fall into the "you had to be there" category but in college we rearranged a banner once so it said "drippy haybath" and now within our group, that's been the way we say it to each other for 20 years. You could also wish them bon voyage on (more or less) another trip around the sun on this blue-green ball of ours. Here's another, since every day besides their birthday is their http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unbirthday, you could wish them a happy un-un-birthday.

Maybe not what you're looking for, but my friends who have their b-days on humorous or obscure holidays get their well-wishes in the form of that day instead. "Happy Flag Day!", for example.
