How to sew my own clothes in Tucson?
-
Where can I learn to sew in Tucson? I want to learn how to sew, with the end goal of being able to make myself clothes. Where in Tucson can I take a beginner's sewing class? Ideally the class would give me the skills to do some very basic tailoring and projects like http://whatwouldanerdwear.blogspot.com/2010/05/lesson-plan-worlds-easiest-skirt.html. I'm a student at UA so I'm looking for something that won't be terribly expensive, and is in the same part of town as campus (I do have a car, so it doesn't have to be walking distance). I also don't have a sewing machine, so suggestions for a class that would provide a sewing machine or recommendations of where I should get a "starter" machine would be great. If nothing like this exists in Tucson, other suggestions as to how to start sewing would be much appreciated. *Anonymous because I'd like to keep my location & other details separate from my account

Answer:
Check out your local big-box crafts store that sells patterns or fabric. Jo-Ann seems to have a couple stores in Tuscon and at least one appears to have http://joann.shoplocal.com/joannsalesflyer/Default.aspx?action=browsepageflash&storeid=2412363&rapid=1036633&pagenumber=1&prvid=JoAnnStores-101201CC&promotioncode=JoAnnStores-101201CC. They generally also provide equipment.

Cathey's Vac and Sew is a top-notch sewing store in Tucson, and they do offer classes. I don't know what your budget is, but at the very least you can get intro classes to familiarize yourself with the machine, and then use books and the Internet to help you learn. As for a starter machine, it's probably best to buy new. A used machine may be in need of a tune-up, and if it is then you're around where you would be money-wise if you'd bought new. I don't sew, but my wife sews some; if she has any more input on this, I'll post it. But it can't hurt to go talk to the people at Cathey's about classes and machines; they've always been great to deal with. (I have to keep my wife out of that store the same way she has to keep me out of the Apple Store.) Good luck! (And don't forget to call anyone you know who lives in a cold climate and let them know how cold our 75-degree days are. It's our city's favorite sport!)

http://telegramhome.tumblr.com/ on 4th Avenue has been offering different kinds of sewing classes. You would need your own machine but the location is very close to U of A. You could call them to ask if they have any classes planned for the near future. http://www.sewingroomtucson.com/index.php is pretty darn far (but then, so are all the Jo Anns) but they have pretty fabrics and a http://www.sewingroomtucson.com/classes.php available. There are two http://www.hancockfabrics.com/Store-Locator_stcVVcatId541679VVviewcat.htm - I couldn't find any evidence on the national web site that they offer classes, but a quick call will answer that question.

Nice find on The Quilt Basket. Didn't know about that one. My wife says to talk to a couple of places about machines before you buy one. She said that one nice side effect of buying a new machine is that some stores offer free classes with the purchase. So ask around and see what you come up with!
