is there a way to manage DNS without being a sysadmin?

VoIP SIP URI DNS SRV WTF BBQ?

  • What cool things can I do with SIP URIs and/or DNS SRV records regarding SIP? I have my own domain, DNS, and I have a VoIP service. I've recently started using a SIP provider for VoIP phone calls. Their configuration page mentions SIP URI's and DNS SRV. So does my SIP client. What are these for? What would using them allow me to do that I don't already do? I have my own domain with DNS service. I can create whatever records I'd need. The VoIP provider has this to say on their page about SIP URI's:Another way of routing incoming calls to your DID numbers is by the use of SIP URI's. To make a SIP URI that can be used with multiple DIDs, use the {DID} tag. The {DID} expression will be replaced automatically by the DID number as it is listed in the "Manage DID section". Example: 1{DID}@Your_IP_address = [email protected] Example: [email protected] What's the point of this? I don't understand the benefit or function. I also don't understand the benefit or function of SIP DNS SRV records. Any help is greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm missing something.

    SRV records let you load balance and failover connections to your SIP servers more flexibly than just round-robining multiple A records. If you only have one SIP end-point (your phone), don't worry about them.

If your provider doesn't add your number to the ENUM database, you can use your SIP URI for that. If the calling system supports ENUM look ups, their server would contact your SIP URI directly. No PSTN along the way. You can register numbers http://www.e164.org/. They do require a donation to set it up. So unless you pay for your inbound calls, I wouldn't bother with it.
