Most realistic strategy game?

BBS door turn based strategy game?

  • What BBS door game did I play in the mid-1990s and where can I find a similar on-line, turn based, multi-player, cooperative(?) strategy game to play with 2 friends? In the mid 1990s I played a BBS door game that was a bit different, sort of like Command and Conquer with color ANSI graphics. There was an overhead view of the board (it might have been hexagonal, although that seems difficult with ANSI). You had a certain number of action points per day to build your fortifications (I remember plasma towers and different strength walls?) and send out attacking units against other players. I think you could harvest resources like you do in games now-a-days. In BBS door game fashion the game was multi-player but not real-time - you used all your points and logged out so someone else could dial in and play. The great part I remember most fondly was joining together with my brother and our friend to destroy the sysop's base. I've paged through hundreds of door game descriptions and nothing is ringing a bell. My friend thinks it had "cyber" in the name. Does this sound familiar to anyone? There was only one BBS we ever found in 404/770 that had it so I don't think it was very popular, certainly not on the level of The Pit, LORD, BRE, or Tradewars. And now the real question: That same friend is now laid up for a month with a broken knee and is quickly going insane. I would love to find either that game or likely more enjoyably, a similar and more modern game. We need to be able to play on-line but not at the same time. Ideally we would not be playing against other people but rather just the three of us against the computer (or against one stranger who wasn't very good and didn't mind losing). I don't know the gaming terminology but a resource extraction and base building / raiding game would be great. I'm fairly opposed to Facebook games but if there is something really awesome there I could create a fake account just to play. Any suggestions? More details: Browser based is better but Windows would do, especially if I can run it in Wine. Free or very cheap is probably a requirement. If someone can identify the door game I would be willing to put up a telnet BBS to host the game. Thank you for your help.

Sounds a lot like it might be one of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Empire_Elite family of games. I think my board used to have http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STellar_Chaos, which was a really popular feature. You might want to try getting it to run under http://emulators.com/gemul8r.htm

Don't mean to hog the question, but on followup, you might want accounts on http://www.tradewarsrising.com/, which is a browser based update of this style of game.

Thank you for your help but I don't think it was one of those games - I don't remember any trading to speak of and everything was on the same planet. I did play Trade Wars so thank you for the link to Trade Wars Rising.
