Looking for one-year programmes in Europe to study political science, public policy, and/or law
-
I'm thinking of applying to spend a year at university in Europe studying political science, public policy, or law. Help me find a programme! I'm thinking of applying to one-year MSc/MPhil/MA programmes in Europe, to spend the next year constructively as well as learn skills in a new area. I'm interested in the following subjects: (1) political science, political economy, international affairs, international relations, public policy (2) law, comparative law, international law, technology law I haven't been to law school, so would need a law programme that does not have a law degree prerequisite. (I know these are hard to find but have heard of a few.) I have a background in economics, biology, and computers. I have dual EU/US citizenship but no ties to any particular city/country. I would prefer to study in English. Future goals are still uncertain, but I will likely end up in academia.

Answer:
Where do you live, and where do you expect to want to live? If you plan on ending up in academia in political science/political economy/IR/etc, you should be applying to phd programs. And you should be applying on the side of the pond you'd prefer to end up living on; transatlantic networking is hard.

UCD has a number of one-year graduate programmes. http://www.ucd.ie/spire/graduatestudies/taughtprogrammes/meconsceuropeaneconomicpublicaffairs/ looks ideally suited to you and is a taught masters. Dublin is a great city, and Ireland is obviously an English-speaking country. The http://www.ucd.ie/spire/graduatestudies/admissionsapplicationsfees/ seems confusing to me, but I would call or email because you really never know - they do take admissions on a rolling basis. I don't think you qualiy for EU tuition because it's done by residency and not passport, for whatever it's worth (which is a lot - tuition doubles for non-EU residents.) Is $16,000 a lot for a one-year masters? Let me know if you need cost of living info.

Deathalicious and I did an MA in International Studies at University of London SOAS. I don't think it helped my career at all, but I had a ton of fun. Meets all your reqs too.

PS, if you're looking at an American PhD, don't go to Europe for your MA. I really lucked out that my PhD program accepted my UK MA. It'd be cheaper to do a joint MA-PhD. But if you're looking to get your feet wet, overseas MA might be fun. But IME UK academia and American academia are quite different.

International Relations at the University of St Andrews (Scotland) is meant to be one of the best, and they do offer http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/intrel/prospectivestudents/postgraduate/ programs. A lot of American students cross the pond to study it here. Disclaimer: I work at the University - but not in IR.

You might want to take a look at http://www.jacobs-university.de/, They do not have any law programs, but they have a good number of MA programs that focus on the political aspects you seem interested.
