Indie Rock Love Songs

  • IndieRockLoveSongFilter: What are some good indie rock love songs? I'm making a CD for a certain someone, yet... I love all kinds of music, but especially indie stuff (more recent stuff). So does she. But the problem is that most of the music I like and listen to is usually depressing, especially the stuff about love. Like that song "Engine Driver" from the Decemberists, or anything by Wilco or Broken Social Scene or whoever; it just makes me want to lie face down on the floor and not move. Not exactly the music I'm looking for... I'm looking for the stuff that will make two sarcastic cynics feel sentimental and hopeful but not cheesy. So if you know of any good love songs that strike that middle ground between gut-wrenchingly depressing and saccharine indiepop, I would very much appreciate it. Better yet, if you had to make a CD for someone you loved, what would you put on it? Genre isn't really important in the end, but I had to pick a theme. Ok, I don't like country. Some songs I have on my short list: "Digital Love" by Daft Punk; "Run Into Flowers" by M83; "Postcard of a Painting" by Maximo Park; "To Be Alone With You" by Sufjan Stevens (as you can see these songs don't necessarily flow together well, but the theme is overridingly digital because we first met online a few years back). If any other information would help, she's multilingual, likes Shakespeare and we are both pretty young.

  • Answer:

Not to be too predictable, but surely there's something on Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs.

.oh, i always say it, but rebecca gates/spinanes has a ton of night music that basks in the rosy glow of loving and missing someone .maybe too cheesy bar rock for the newer hipsters, but i still stand by the twilight singers/afghan whigs. yes.

D'oh, I think you might be right, and I mis-remembered that one. I remembered it as a good love song. Better put an asterisk after it.

'Ever Fallen In Love? - Buzzcocks' Hell no, it says 'ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't fall in love with' if memory serves me right!

I just scanned the comments above, take any doubles as a hearty seconding of the song. Ever Fallen In Love? - Buzzcocks. The Love Cats - The Cure. She's Supersonic (OR) Cosmic Allison - Hazel La La Love You (OR) Here Comes Your Man - Pixies The World Loves Us And Is Our Bitch - McLusky* I Think I'm In Love - Spiritualized Love->Building On Fire - Talking Heads Prove My Love - Violent Femmes Love (Via Satellite) - Six Finger Satellite Love Buzz - Nirvana Love Japanese Style - Ex Models Love You To Death - 400 Blows* Tarnished Angel (OR) Cotton Girl - Silkworm Baby Stick Around - Joe Jackson Freezer Burn / I Wanna Be Your Dog - Sonic Youth* Cast a Shadow - Beat Happening Sexy Results - Death From Above 1979 (for another DFA option). Car - Built to Spill * Depending on how playful the mix and relationship is some of these might not be quite the message you want to convey.

Iconomy mentioned a Reindeer Section song already, but if you don't mind having multiple songs by artists on your disc, I do have to throw a vote in for "You Are My Joy." It's just gorgeous.

Trial of the Century - French Kicks. And I just have to add that if someone made me a mixtape with Red Right Ankle on it, I'd probably swoon, sarcastic cynic though I am.

Wow.. what a spectacular thread. All of the songs I could think of have already been listed, but I must second a couple of them: The Postal Service - Such Great Heights Ben Folds - The Luckiest Also, some not so indie, but great love songs that were not "major singles" (that I'm aware): Incubus - I Miss You Semisonic - Singing in my Sleep [incidentally, a song about mixtapes as an expression of affection] Lots of songs in this thread I haven't heard of, and will now have to check out. Yay sap. :-)

Iron&Wine- Lion's Mane Autumn Sweater- Yo La Tengo Superwolf- Beast for Thee

How well do you know her? Have you had sex yet? Not to be crass or anything, but there are plenty of songs that you can only really put on a mix tape after you've had a significant amount of relationship, otherwise it's too much. That said, here are some that I didn't see advocated above and that I think are, well, better. Because I'm a jerk. The first is one that I ysi'ed to MeChahttp://s30.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=341I9VZU0P9503GYRLJEWS2932 by http://www.dabenport.com. 88 Lines About 44 Women by The Nails I Will Wait by Ed's Redeeming Qualities The New Face of Zero and One by The New Pornographers All About is Your Love by The Rants All Brand New by Coax Are You The One by The Presets Back of my Mind by Cast Could You Ever Love a Girl by Kelly Caldwell (twee folk, recommended for many of the thread participants) Sugar by Superdrag Brass in Pocket by Kelis (yeah, it's a Pretenders cover. You can go with that if you want, it's also great. I've just been listening to the cover lately). Sailor by http://www.thescarsmusic.com/music/%22 Careful by Sebedoh (maybe. It's kinda creepy too). Big Hush by Shriekback Could You Be The One by Hüsker Du Crazy 'Bout You by The Nasty Facts Lust in Love by The Go-Gos Easy by The Quails I Want Need Love You by The Dirtbombs (cover) I have more, but I'm getting kinda bored looking for just indie rock. Do you want soul, funk, jazz, rap, punk? Have the skills to mix it?
