What is this tune? I have to find out what it is?

Find me offbeat wonky pop in the vein of W H O K I L L by tUnE-yArDs!

  • Find me offbeat wonky pop in the vein of W H O K I L L by tUnE-yArDs! So I love the new tUnE-yArDs album and want to find more stuff like it. Strange and offbeat samply or guitary music, interesting mathy beats or strange infectious grooves. I want it upbeat and as poppy as possible whilst still being all over the shop. Other touchpoints include: Los Campesinos! Everything Everything Dirty Projectors 'Walkabout' by Atlas Sound Remain in Light-era Talking Heads The weirder end of Super furry Animals. Thanks! Excited!

Have you ever listened to Deerhoof? They are sort of what you're looking for, maybe a little stranger. I'd start with their later albums (Deerhoof vs. Evil or Friend Opportunity) if you're more interested in having a pop element. There's also a band called Experimental Dental School you might dig - very atonal guitar focused stuff.

Dang, I had a few immediate suggestions but you already covered most of them in your list! Other possibilities: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVjLrzCegtM (their newest album Shangri La is full of stuff that fits your criteria) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUEZkLa_ZoY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ET4F5VRAtFk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAqm-i8kGUc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMIt3LOLczo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXdwb_lUKvs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohSpsB_O_bI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0HvpwTS1xchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FsvMyQeC-Q&ob=av2e (slightly nsfw video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gc7471QhTo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oCJAsYnBPM&ob=av2n http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zemkodUsPEw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFMMstpu8dw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeWTpSxsUns http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9no7rDD9Yc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5-FrWlh_MM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B2odgXgyh4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iJcl8cD7QY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSt630WOOWo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0EC4vV7PoE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHdcPlfwmkg&ob=av2n http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swZ_hMhwETg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8RXeZTy5m8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZKkrKNAlrU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3AmnRPImfk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUq7tbuH00E etc etc etc Hopefully some of these fit the bill. PS - That's awesome you put 'Walkabout' by Atlas Sound, I'm in love with that song but most I play it for don't :)

I think Architecture in Helsinki's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7anvx32Q6M&feature=related album is a great example of off-beat pop, both lyrically and musically, although their output since then has varied in quality to put it nicely. Seconding Ariel Pink, so weird, yet always with an ear for great, poppy hooks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wiLqAu4s-_s is one of the best songs of the past 10 years I would say. They also feature on the Tradi-Mods vs. rockers compilation which you might really like, it's basically a bunch of well known indie bands doing versions of Congotronics Skeletons & the Kings of All Cities is a lesser known band, their 2008 album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kN_HOCRZHjM is a bit more on the experimental end of pop/rock. Reminds me of Dirty Projectors' approach a bit. Napoleon IIIrd is another good choice, kind of a cross between Ariel Pink and Panda Bear. Here's a cut from last year's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=751u4gan98A album that sums up his manic style. One more, Clive Tanaka y su Orquesta, example from recent release http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2bKdBI4gbw.

Thanks – saw him live last year. Really really good indeed.

The previous tUnE-yArDs album, Birdbrains is good.
