How cold can it be outside to work with fiberglass resin?

Where Can I Buzz Fiberglass Off My Boat?

  • Where is a good place in the San Francisco Bay Area to work on a fiberglass boat? I have a little fiberglass dinghy that I'd like to sand, lay down some strips of fiberglass upon, and then sand again. I'm a renter in Oakland and I can't do this at home. Do any of my neighbors know about casual places to do fiberglass work in the Bay Area? I need a little space, some electricity for sanding, and the same little space for applying fiberglass resin, all for a couple or three days. Is there a place for me to do what I want to do?

There's http://techshop.ws/ in Menlo Park. Pretty close to the Dumbarton Bridge.

There are some dry-docks near Hunter's Point in SF that have everything you'd need, but it might be overkill for a dinghy. Most of the work there is being done on full-size boats. Still, worth a look :)

Call around to the various harbormasters (Berkeley Marina, Richmond, etc.) and see what they recommend; if they don't have facilities themselves, they will surely know who does. The folks at http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/AjaxStoreLocatorDisplayView?langId=-1&storeId=11151&catalogId=10001 in Alameda might also have suggestions.

Berkeley Marine Center Svendsen's Boatworks Grand Marina Boatyard KKMI Bay Marine These are all boatyards in the east bay. Any one of them would probably let you do your work in a corner of the yard. Most of them have a chandlery on site where you could buy materials. You might have to explain that it's a pretty small boat, but most if not all of these places are used to people trailering their boat in as opposed to having the boat hauled by the yard - just ask for the yard manager and explain what you want to do and see if they can accommodate you.

Great ideas -- thanks, all!

There are a couple ship builders on the old naval base in Alameda, and some stuff just south along the estuary from Jack London Square in Oakland. I know nothing about them; I just know that they're there.
