Testing iPhone app in Windows?
-
iPhoneFilter: How can I test someone's application in Windows without having an iPhone? I have a friend who wants me to look at their iPhone app but I don't have an iPhone myself. They app is currently on sale in the app store and is not a free app, however they have told me that they can get me a limited-time trial version. Is there any software I can download or website I can visit that will allow me to use the trial link they gave me to access the app and try it out? Or is there any software out there that could allow me to emulate the iPhone and actually run apps if I were to get the actual app file from him? I've googled the hell out of this and all of the emulators that I've been able to find are purely for emulating the web browser or the interface of the iphone...they can't actually run apps. Just to repeat, I am on Windows (XP and Vista) so no Mac or Linux solutions please.

Answer:
The cheapest, most unofficial solution I could think of is going to an Apple store and trying the app on one of the iPhones on the floor. It's not the best solution but it's available if you get desperate.

I'm 99% sure you are out of luck. The only iPhone simulator I know of comes with X-Code and only runs on a mac.

Yeah, you're SOL. The official emulator (it's not a simulator) is Intel Mac-only; I've never heard of anyone trying to build a third-party one, much less having a working one.
Tomorrowful
Actually, even if you had a Mac and the simulator you would be SOL. From Apple's http://developer.apple.com/IPhone/library/documentation/Xcode/Conceptual/iphone_development/125-Using_iPhone_Simulator/iphone_simulator_application.html:In the iPhone Simulator, you can install only applications that you build using the iPhone Simulator SDK. You cannot install applications from the App Store in the simulator. The only way for you to test your friend's app is on an iPhone or iPod Touch.
dyslexictraveler
Dyslexictraveler is right. The simulator does not run ARMv6 code. You'll need an iPhone or iPod Touch to run the compiled application. (If your friend sends you the source code as a project archive, you would, in that case, be able to run the app on the Simulator, but you would still need a Mac to install and run the iPhone developer tools package. There are no Windows options here.)

Not really. Even if you had a Mac, getting ahold of the iPhone dev stuff is probably impractical. If you have a friend with a jailbroken iPhone they could run a http://www.tuaw.com/2008/09/18/veency-vnc-server-for-iphone/ on the phone and launch the app for you to view remotely with a VNC client on your computer. The experience is likely to be pretty poor.

Even if you had a Mac, getting ahold of the iPhone dev stuff is probably impractical. You can sign up for a free Apple Developer Connection account http://developer.apple.com/, which will let you download the developer's tools package, with which you can run applications using the iPhone Simulator. You don't need to pay for the developer's tools unless you plan to distribute compiled applications to devices.

Can you try using their computer and a remote connection to access their simulator on their Mac?
oxit
oxit's answer is your best bet. Even if you had a mac and the dev tools, you would need the source to their application to compile and run in the simulator. Look at VNC or mikogo or other various desktop sharing solutions. (Ok, you could try installing OS X in vmware and then installing X-Code and the simulator, but last time I checked that wouldn't be functional enough to be useful)
