Agree with Weather Underground. If you want to go back before 1996 try either http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/ncdc.html or http://www.weathergraphics.com/archive (both cost money).

(P.S. Aren't you just looking for climatological information for a particular time of the calendar year, rather than weather on a specific date in history? In that case Weather Underground should suffice for poking around at 1996 to 2006).
