What is a train conductors schedule like?

Help me read the train schedule

  • I can't read the LIRR schedule, can you help me? OK, it's important that I get from Brooklyn to Long Island tomorrow morning. A friend is leaving from Penn Station in Manhattan and I want to leave from the Flatbush/Atlantic Avenue Station. When I look at the timetable here http://mta.info/lirr/html/ttn/wyandanc.htm It looks like the train leave Flatbush BEFORE it leaves Penn Station. What is up with this? Their is a train that leaves Penn Station at 10:14 AM and one the leaves Flatbush at 10:09 AM. Is this the same train? Why does it appear to leave Brooklyn before Manhattan? How can I meet my friend on it?

  • Answer:

You aren't; the LIRR schedule is incredibly difficult to read, and FYI, sometimes they make service changes and don't update the website. Hope that doesn't happen to you.

They are different trains. You will have to switch at Jamaica for the train to wherever you are going. When I've had to meet people in situations like this, we pick a location on the track ("middle") and use cell phones to coordinate.

Take a look at http://mta.info/lirr/html/lirrmap.htm. The Flatbush branch goes to Jamaica, Queens, and meets the Wyandanch train there. Hence the J next to the time in the timetable, which, according to the key, stands for "change trains in Jamaica."

I think I've got it now. We take two different trains but we can meet in Jamaica. Somehow, that sounds nicer than it will be doesn't it? Thanks for your help. I must be a small town hick.

Anyway, if one of you is delayed, the other can check out the immediate area -- it's not Times Square but it's an interesting area of the city that not everyone gets to every day.

hackly_fracture

make sure your friend gets off the train, cause she doesn't have to switch. do like bodega says and pick a place to meet, and be on your phones cause you don't have much time.
