What do you think about the open university?

Should the university campus be open to tourists? What do you think?

  • Answer:

Our campus is gorgeous -- lots of plantings and some cool architecture (also some pretty boring architecture, but hey). Plus, being a Health Sciences Center, there is a lot of coming and going of people who are visiting the clinics or hospitals (so not like you could really exclude tourists). Plus, we want people with money to visit and feel like they have a stake in our university so they fund chairs, departments, or hospital wings. Even if they don't have money, they still might spend some in the gift shop or cafeteria (so stuff still gets funded). So in our case, the answer is a giant yes. Now, if your university is located in an area where it is fairly dangerous and students live on campus and are on the young side, maybe then you might want to have a closed campus, just to ensure that everyone is safe.

Many of the really old colleges have places of historical/cultural significance on them. There's Lee Chapel, for instance, or Harvard Yard, for a better-known example. Using things like these as tourist attractions brings more people to campus, which both makes campus look busier to people are visiting for admissions and which increases awareness of the school. So, by all means, university campuses should be open to both prospective students and the regular public.

They sort of are open.  However, I think it would be a great idea to have regular guided tours.  It might enhance interest in higher education.  There is something about the feel of a University campus that you really don't get from brochures and web pages.

They are. I know Stanford, Cal, UCSB, UCLA,  UCSC, UCSD are. Pretty much any UC is(it's a public uni by name anyawy), and I'm sure plenty of others are as well.
