Do you think a website that shows the mobile version of other websites could be useful?
-
I read many articles on blogs every day and 98% of them don't have a mobile optimized version of their website. So I often need to carefully zoom in and move left-to-right to be able to read the post. Building an optimized version for mobile of a website (blogs, newspaper..) is expensive because itĀ requires knowledge of HTML5, the best practices of JS, CSS and the site also needs to be compatible with older mobile phones. So I thought about how to solve this problem and came up with the following: Build a web application that grabs content of an external website (via FEED RSS or scraping) and shows it in an optimized version for mobile phones. Each website that wants to have a mobile version of its blog needs to justĀ put up a link on this website. Example: http://www.mobileversion.com/?site=http%3A%2F%2Fnytimes.com and a mobile version of the site could be automatically seen, without the need for each site to create its own mobile version. Thus it can be accomplished just by inserting a web link. Do you think if this could be useful?

Answer:
I think this is a pretty cool idea. I'm not sure how hard it'll be to implement on websites that don't have RSS feed or not blogs. Another issues is caching. In the end it might be something between publishing apps like http://Pulse.me and RSS readers like Google Reader. Personally I rarely read non-mobile friendly website on my phone or tablet. Here are some services which allow to turn desktop websites into mobile friendly versions of themselves: http://mashable.com/2010/12/16/create-mobile-site-tools/ http://www.1stwebdesigner.com/tutorials/mobile-version-website/ http://spyrestudios.com/10-great-tools-to-create-a-mobile-version-of-your-site/ http://www.dudamobile.com/
