Can a foreigner start a business in Israel?

  • I'm a US-citizen staying in Israel on a tourist visa. I'd like to stay permanently and start a tech startup. Is this possible as a foreigner? Also, could my new business sponsor myself for a work visa? UPDATE: I am not Jewish so Aliya is out of the question.

    I have no idea about immigration and visa laws but if you are Jewish you can do 'Aliya' and get not only an Israeli Passport but also a lot of tax (and other) benefits. Another option might be to partner with an Israeli, open the company and then issue yourself a visa from your new company (though this will require a lawyer's advice etc.) I'm also pretty certain that if you'd want to invest money in the country by opening a company the powers that be will be more than happy to take your money and give you the paperwork. You can simply call the 'home office' (misrad ha'pnim) and ask them those questions. I can't promise they'll be nice though. A lawyer dealing with immigration/work law might be nicer but he will also take your money.

Based on an answer I received from someone who knows: Generally speaking: They can't legally live here permanently on a tourist visa They can establish a company In order for the company to sponsor their work visa they need to fulfill certain criteria which most startups don't fulfill The Tel Aviv municipality might be able to shed more light on this - I suggest you get in touch!

They can definitely do this by establishing a company with Israeli partners. That's what we did. Meaning: they can be registered as shareholders, but as for coming and managing the day-to-day execution, it is a bit problematic for them.
