How can a mechanical engineer market himself to a startup?

  • I'm a Mechanical Engineer by education, but have worked on a number of startups since I graduated a little over a year ago. Even while I was in college, I had a variety of part-time jobs to be able to diversify my resume. As far as getting a more traditional engineering job, that diversity seems to be hurting my chances. I love working for startups simply because they excite me. Being able to be involved in everything from the low-level grunt work to the high-level decision making appeals to me and something that I've done productively at the few companies I've helped. Just a brief outline of my experience: + Started off as a night manager at Hollywood Video, managing the entire night crew including all cash handling, customer service and store management. One of the most fun jobs I've ever had, despite the low pay. Had to leave because the store closed. + Worked at Wheel Works for 6 months as a technician then sales associate. Also a very fun job because I've always wanted to learn how to fix cars. I ended up getting promoted to sales associate, the youngest they had at 24, until the manager and assistant manager didn't take kindly to my suggestions on how to run their front office. + Took a summer marketing internship at a startup IT staffing firm, IQ Tech Pros. Despite having no knowledge about marketing whatsoever, I taught myself within weeks the basic fundamentals and assisted with major upgrades to the company's website and marketing documents. I also did B2B sales for them by contacting different VARS and offering them our services. + After graduation, took a job as an online academic coach at a tutoring center while I looked for full-time work (stayed there 4 months). A week into the job, I developed a simple tutorial for the software we used detailing the multiple shortcuts available that would be beneficial to the coaches. Management decided to add that to their training program, and told me I'd always be welcome back if I ever need work. + Got an offer to collaborate with an art and technology incubator whose founders I met in college through my fraternity. In the 9 months I've worked there, I've done product design for an intervalometer, instructional video for creating time-lapse videos, managed the development and data mining process of a podcast repository service and solely distributed an independent film around the US. I would continue working with them but at the moment I need something that pays even a little so that I can manage my student loans. + In the last three months, I've been consulting a variety of companies and startups pro bono: 1) I convinced the managing editor of a major South-East Asian newspaper that his website needed an overhaul. After he told me about the problems they faced with their IT staff, I got authorization from him to hire and fire people. Once a new IT staff was organized, I managed them remotely and trained both the editorial staff and IT staff to communicate effectively with each other. They will also soon be implementing a social media marketing strategy that I put together for them, all within a month. 2) I'm passionate about education, especially in South-East Asia where there's a lot of poverty and turmoil. My relatives are involved with setting up a new polytechnic institute which is aimed at providing low-income students specialized training in areas where they're interested in becoming professionals. I provided them with a basic educational strategy based on my own college experience and curriculum from prestigious colleges and universities in the US. I am now an advisor for their board of directors. 3) I heard of an inventor designing a very cheap solar cooker with the intention of providing it to impoverished countries. I tracked him down, understood his goals and provided him with a sales and marketing plan utilizing his resources. I helped him reach out to non-profit organizations and charities who would be interested in distributing his product. I keep getting the same responses: You're experience is very varied, but there's no way we can quantify it and hire you based on your resume since you've only been out of college a year. I've even offered to work for them for free so that I could prove myself, but without any luck. How can I market myself as someone who's versatile? How can I convince a startup or other enterprise that I'm a valuable asset they should have on board? Any help or advice would be very much appreciated! I can even send you a copy of my resume if you'd be so kind as to critique it, or you could take a look at my LinkedIn page. Thank you in advance.
