How to start Apache Solr automatically?

Why does eBay (product) develop Apache Solr? Why doesn't eBay (product) use Solr?

  • presented a keynote at Hadoop World about Cassini: http://www.infoq.com/news/2011/11/eBay_new_search. Why does develop their own search engine? Couldn't satisfy their requirements?

  • Answer:

What I've read about it so far, it is not just a search engine, they might have used instead along with the cluster that they operate. might not be fitting exactly to their needs and they might have decided to do it on their own. But what I see from the article on InfoQ, they've not specified in detail about the search itself.

Not all search problems are created equal. eBay search is different than searching a collection of static documents.  You can read more about it in this blog post by Hugh Williams:  http://hughewilliams.com/2012/04/19/ranking-at-ebay-part-1/.

Because 's search results are more about business logic priority than the best relevance result based on the search criteria. For example, searching "iphone 16 gb" in typical search engine will return any iPhone 16 GB listings, perhaps sorted by price and dates.  But eBay also includes other business factors in their Best Match algorithm: is the seller trust worthy (eBay Top Rated Sellers)? Do the sellers offer Free shipping? What do the buyers prefer to buy? All these factors are always changing (in fact some of the factors mentioned may not be part of the algorithm anymore) and therefore needs their own system to manage and fine tune it.
