Where to buy Japanese furniture?

How much should real furniture cost, and where can I buy it?

  • With Pottery Barn, West Elm, IKEA, Crate & Barrel, etc. we've all become accustomed to inexpensive, particle board furniture made in a factory in Asia. But this type of furniture has a huge carbon footprint, and needs to be replaced/thrown away every few years. Where can one find actual wood furniture made by craftspeople, and how much should it cost?

  • Answer:

If the aesthetic appeals to you, look into mid-century modern furniture. There's a reason you see so much of it on Craigslist --  most of it is of high quality and really lasts! You'd be lucky if a charity thrift shop even accepted a 10 year old Pottery Barn sofa, but mid-century furniture holds up much better over time. For example, the Florence Knoll sofa looks just as great today as it did when originally produced in the 1950s. Although this sofa is still manufactured by Knoll, you can find a vintage one at a great price. Here's a new Knoll sofa upholstered in leather. And a vintage Knoll sofa reupholstered in velvet. In terms of carbon footprint, buying vintage or antique furniture is the best way to minimize environmental impact. Check out Wright Auctions (http://www.wright20.com) for high-end modern furniture. You don't have to wait for their auctions since they also have Wright Now, which has furniture available for immediate sale (http://www.wright-now.com). I particularly love this Paul Evans table -- it would be great in a conference room. Cost for furniture of any kind is highly variable. You can spend less than $100 for a quality piece of mid-century furniture which has solid wood construction, or $100,000+ for a single chair.

There are several good answers already. For those on a budget, estate sales, used furniture stores and thrift shops can yield some great finds, particularly if you have some refinishing skills.Artisan crafted furniture is another good possibility, but most artisans concentrate on fairly simple and basic designs. The best and most experienced artisans may be booked up for months (or even years) ahead.Small manufacturers who specialize in solid wood furniture have been steadily disappearing worldwide over the past 30 years, but there still are a few left if you are prepared to search.I am the owner of  https://www.simplicitysofas.com, a High Point, North Carolina manufacturer specializing in hand crafted sofas, sleepers, sectionals and reclining furniture made with solid oak frames. Because building furniture this way does cost more than mass produced plywood construction, https://www.simplicitysofas.com makes its furniture affordable by bypassing retailers and selling direct to consumers. At the same time a mass customization production process, combined with a modular design using interchangeable components, allows the company to build and ship thousands of different custom-built configurations in 30 days or less. The sofa pictured below is built using the frame pictured above. It is available in a choice of over 200 fabrics and more than a dozen custom options.Pricing is approximately the same as similar looking furniture from Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel.

I personally think if you want quality furniture, you should try yard sales, second hand stores, craigslist, and freecycle. You are keeping these items from landfills and many times there is very little "wrong" with them. Occasionally a minor repair may need to be made, a hardware change, or even a few coats of paint can refresh the piece and take the "dated" feel away. Most of the older pieces are solid wood, will last for many more years, and are more story than most of what you can buy today. Price is dependent on condition, piece, and demand.

Great question! Crafts people can be a bit challenging to locate as they often don't spend a lot of time promoting and rely on word of mouth. Where do you live? I am a furniture maker of 10yrs and specialize in fine wood furniture. I operate an online gallery called Oden Gallery and represent professional North American artisans. Perhaps one of our artisans lives in your area? http://odengallery.com/Some ideas on how where to find local artisans: guilds, craft councils, your local art communities, google searches. The London Factory is a US based online furniture retailer focused on high-end luxury furniture made out of real solid wood. TLF makes many of their furniture in the US, unlike the competition that focuses on importing cheap furniture from China. Handcrafted solid wood furniture being built in America is a rare find. Our prices are very competitive, and the primary focus is on creating fine furniture that lasts for many generations. http://www.thelondonfactory.com/ Disclosure, I am a part owner in this company.

You have to search for specialty locations. Find out where local designers source their products from.  It might even be worth it to hire a designer as you'll have better luck sourcing quality product. Not all furniture made overseas is low quality. You obviously want to stay away from MDF and particle board. You can low-quality American made products just the same.   Read the fine details about the product and ask as many questions as you can think of.  This will help you weed out low quality products that are thinly veiled by ambiguous descriptions.  Companies that create quality product will be ready and willing to tell you more about the production process.

India is one the finest quality producers of Furniture in the world. India still produces furniture from Sheesham, Teak timber. Furniture that lasts for generations without much maintenance. As most low cost retails chains selling board and particle furniture have not entered our country. We still have small manufacturers producing good quality furniture from timber and steel. I have been involved in sourcing and exporting this furniture to some well known European high end retailers and US brands. You can buy your furniture through furniture brands buying from India or in this globalized world you can directly order through a broker from your country and we can export the goods to you for the designs you want at cost much lower than you will pay in US. Also a lot of wonderful artisanal manufacturers are their in your country but they come into speciliased category and their rates will be at a premium but if you like the quality and designs the premium is worth it. You can contact me at with your requirements.
