Which airline frequent flyer program offers the best value for flight to Abu Dhabi?
-
I will be flying to Abu Dhabi with Turkish Airlines, via Istanbul. I will then be based in Abu Dhabi for the next two years, and I anticipate making several flights to a variety of long-haul destinations, and probably a few within the middle east region. I also have the boarding passes needed to claim mileage from the last 12 months, including a return flight between Seoul and London on SAS and an Air India flight from Bangkok-London. I've also heard a lot of good things about Etihad's program, and will be able to collect non-flying points from their commercial partners in Abu Dhabi itself. I know many of these airlines are within the Star Alliance grouping, but I am unsure which loyalty program offers the best deal to redeem my unclaimed airmiles to. Any advice would be most welcome!

Answer:
The reality is pretty simple - if you're going to be based out of Abu Dhabi, flying anything BUT Etihad is going to put you in a tricky spot for finding flights. Just look at the airport's Wikipedia page to see how strong Etihad coverage is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Dhabi_International_Airport). Note - Etihad technically isn't part of any alliance, but there are enough codeshares that you should have a good time with. One question here - do you know where you will be based when you return? It may then be useful to have some other airline you're a part of, but then again, by 2014, it could be that Etihad is part of an alliance. I think it's Etihad or not much else. Enjoy! Now that Etihad partners with AAdvantage - credit your Etihad flight miles there. If you fly another codeshare (Air Seychelles?) credit to Etihad Guest. Before each flight make sure if the specific fare class allows for mileage accrual.
