How to import facebook comments to Disqus?

Is there a way to import posts from one site into another, images and all?

  • With two sites, both using posts for the blog with Disqus comments, the new site running on Genesis -- is there a way to export blog posts from the old site, then import them into the new site with images and Disqus images ported over intact? Using the Tools > Export/Import, not all posts retained embedded media, and those that did are still pointing to their location on the old site. And is there a way to transfer Disqus comments for each post?

  • Answer:

You may want to check out this wordpress plugin called backupbuddy. It simplifies the way we move sites. It is a premium plugin but it saves a ton of time.

When it comes to Disqus comments you have to understand that they are primarily hosted on Disqus server, and the commenting is embedded on your posts. Technically, you can simply use the same Disqus shortname and simply enable it on the new site and than sync it with new WordPress. Unless it's a brand new name, than you would need to make sure to import Disqus comments back into WordPress (syncing) on the old website, than use WordPress export/import tool to import content (including comments) to the new WordPress site, than enable Disqus and use import feature to sync comments with new Disqus shortname. That's what I would do. To make your life easier, simply download uploads folder and upload it to the new site through FTP. Than, install a plugin called Search and Replace, and do a search/replace for old domain and replace it with new domain. Be careful, it's a powerful tool and easy to mess up. So you want to make sure you're replacing exactly the same format, here's an example of a bad replace. http://www.domain.com (find) http://www.domain.com/ (replace) That would be bad, since you have that extra / for a new domain. http://www.domain.com (find) http://www.domain.com (replace) That's good. That's the jist of migration. Please note, if you're having issues with WordPress Import tool and unable to import XML file, please see this trick and it might import everything - it worked for me many times. Download and Install 7zip. Right click on your .XML file -> 7zip -> Add to Archive Change the "Archive format" to gzip and hit "OK". You'll now see your file with a .gz extension on it. Try to import/upload the file again (selecting the .gz you just created not the .xml file) and it should work. Yep. Just go to TOOLS › EXPORT on the original site. Then go to TOOLS › IMPORT on the new site, and choose "download media" when you get that option. Voila!
