Which are the books on the royal bookshelves?

Libraries and Librarianship: How do you eliminate the sheer stresses that books experience on bookshelves?

  • Books have a tendency to "lean over", and unfortunately, this isn't always correctable, especially when you take books off bookshelves. Even books in full bookshelves can experience such stresses

  • Answer:

I don't see how full bookshelves (or bookshelves anchored with sliding bookends) could contribute to shear stresses. For I'd say that bookends are the answer: https://www.google.com/search?q=bookends&espv=2&biw=1632&bih=795&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=zEwIVc_sGpOBNp-DhNgH&sqi=2&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg A problem you don't mention is sag. Hard covers on books extend beyond the paper by a small amount. Over time, as books simply sit on shelves, gravity pulls the pages down, putting additional stress on the upper part of the spine. The traditional (if labor-intensive) way of dealing with this to keep half one's books upside down and rotate them on a fixed schedule.
