How to use variable as Object Key?

How could we still feel the sense of touch when we use a small object to touch something?

  • When we touch something through a relatively small object / medium of relative density and volume, we can still feel the sense of touch as we are touching directly. What is its scientific definition and Is there any mathematical formula that explains the physical property of a medium that could allow the sensory impulses to work with respect to the physical property of the object ? Can we magnify this phenomenon ? Thanks a lot :D hi5 :D

  • Answer:

This is a phenomenon known as projection.   Your body schema (where your body parts are, what shape they are, and their state) are all in an area known as the somatosensory cortex in the parietal lobe of the brain. This is a pretty complicated area, which is used to integrate all kinds of inputs, predict the results of moving your body, and rationalize the results. It's also related to the area of your brain which acts as working-set memory (allowing you to manipulate concepts visually), and builds a map of the world around you.   The cool thing about your body schema is that it's flexible, and rapidly accomodates to changes. So when you hold a pen or a screwdriver, your body schema integrates that object into it, and updates its predictions, translating the sensations you feel in your body as if they were sensations originating in the tool you're holding.   You can amplify this mechanism by shutting off sensory inputs you don't need - such as hearing, vision - and focusing your attention carefully on what you're doing.   Other ways of amplifying it include making sure that you're holding your head within about 15 degrees of vertical. Tilting your head within this range will cause your vestibular system to rotate your eyeballs from side to side to keep what you're seeing level - requiring less processing power. If you tilt your head outside this range, your eyeballs will rotate back to normal rotation, and your parietal lobe will take on a lot of the processing required to handle processing the rotation of the scene. This will reduce your ability to process the sensory data, reducing the projection a little.
