What do you have to do to get into a Fraternity?

How does it work to get into a fraternity? What's the process like?

  • I didn't have frats at my school. How does the funnel work? How many people are there at the start? How does it winnow down? What's the timing? Initiation?

has a good answer for the formalities, but I'd urge you to take a closer look at the "pledge" part of that process. You won't find this on their website or by going to public events of the fraternity. You probably won't even find even find out by asking fraternity members directly (not to be melodramatic, this is just my experience). That said, pledging is probably the single biggest differentiator between joining a fraternity and joining a different student club, and it's worth getting as good a sense as possible of the requirements before deciding whether to join. Pledging can be anything from team-building exercises, to physical challenges, to forced binge drinking, to... well, there's really no end to what it could entail. There's no way to generalize across different fraternities, or even different chapters of the same fraternity. I would try and ask questions of upperclassmen who know brothers of the fraternity, and get a sense of what the process was like for a given chapter at your school.

Recruitment varies at every school.  If you are interesting in joining a fraternity I advise you to check out your university's website to find more information from the Greek Life office at your campus.  If there is a particular fraternity or sorority that you are looking to join, it never hurts to find their website or Facebook group and see what their upcoming events are, or try and get in touch through phone/email. Most schools have specific periods of recruitment, often referred to as "Rush" where chapters will open up their houses or have a week of planned events giving potential new members the opportunity to see if joining a fraternity is right for them.  During this process the active members try to get to know the guys who come out to their events and see if they would be a good fit for their chapter. A bid is given from the chapter to a potential member when they wish to have them become a member of their fraternity.  The potential new member may choose to accept the bid which means they become a "pledge" of that chapter.  Also, depending on the school and how their system works you may often receive a bid from multiple fraternities, at which point you can choose the one you wish to pursue.  Accepting your bid is the next step in the process to becoming a full member of the fraternity.
