Do we need to buy SSL certificate for iOS push notifications?

• Our iOS developer asked me to install SSL certificate on the server for  push notifications without any details and I feel he is not know what he  exactly want. So, my question is do we really need to purchase SSL certificate?

• Answer:

  Push notifications are sent server-to-server-to-device. Your server sends the payload to Apple's server which then forwards it to the target device. Only you can send messages to your app. You cannot send messages to any one else's app and no one else can send messages to your app. The SSL certificate is used on your server to prove its identity to the Apple server. Using the SSL signature, Apple can verify that your server is a valid sender of notifications for your application. This prevents hackers from (easily) spoofing your server, hijacking your push notification channel and sending unauthorized messages to your app. I think Mark is confusing the SSL certificate used to push notifications and the app publication certificate you get from the Apple developer portal that you use to digitally sign your app for submission to the app store.
