Who is marketing manager?

If one has done a short stint in Marketing (Product Marketing or call it strategic marketing), does that add value to a PRODUCT MANAGER profile? Would outbound acts like Marketing be considered as valuable or is it secondary to core Engg. experience?

  • The general view is that the Product Manager has to be customer/market focused and be responsible for delivering the product as well. In most of the interviews and articles/posts in LinkedIn/Quora, the discussion is quite focused on the Engineering background of the product manager (and in some cases the domain expertise he brings to the table) and that's why I brought this question up. How relevant is Outbound expeirence in addition to the core inbound pm experience?

  • Answer:

I think your specified bias does play a major role here. Most PMs in India work very closely with the dev teams and do not have enough opportunities to interact directly with customers. Hence the focus on engineering background. On your particular case, if what you mean by outbound marketing was GTM execution for a particular product/s, it adds significant value. Communicating what has been built well is the job of the PM.
