Who is the best batsman of all time?

Why is Sachin Tendulkar considered the best batsman of all time?

  • I have been following cricket passionately since 1994, and leaving apart the period from 1992 to 1998 end when Sachin was the be all and end all of Indian cricket, I personally have not found the reason as to why he is considered God by many. Make no doubt about it, in my opinion SRT is one of the world's greatest batsman. But, the greatest ever in the history of the game? Edit: Other than the Dravids and the Pontings, there have existed batsmen of the type of Adam Gilchrist, Virender Sehwag, Micheal Bevan, Sanath Jayasuriya etc who are completely different in terms of technique (and team role) as SRT / Ponting etc have played, but who rightfully must be considered while comparing batsmen.

  • Answer:

I think Bradman, Viv, Sachin are the three greatest batsman of all time which can not be compared as they played in different generations. But among them people often choose one as greatest either because he is their favorite or simply because he is from their country. Some times I also get biased towards Sachin because of above two reasons :) and this(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisden_100#Top_5_Test_batsmen). This list really matters because it didn't rate batsman based on their record but the ratings were calculated by scoring each individual batting and bowling performance in various criteria. Apart from the player's actual score or figures, criteria which were taken into account included the strength of the opposition players, the quality of the pitch, the result of the match, and the player's contribution to this result. The maximum possible rating was 300. See carefully Sachin is common in both Test and ODI and ranked 2nd in both. Regarding his(Sachin) comparison with peers, I can compare him with Dravid, Ponting, Lara. Which I think 95% people will agree are three other great batsman of this generation along with Sachin. I am leaving Kallis although he has better avg. but still he is not a specialist batsman and avg. alone can not determine someone's greatness in batting. 1. Performance in big matches and chasing in ODI:- Batsman | ODI avg | ODI SR | Final avg | Final SR | Chase avg | Chase SR Sachin    |    44.83   |   86.23   |     54.44   |     87.68   |    42.33      |     88.44           Dravid     |    39.16   |   71.24   |     34.71   |     68.13   |    35.24      |     68.78 Ponting   |    42.03   |   80.39   |     38.42   |     82.21   |    41.93      |     76.34 Lara        |    40.48   |   79.51   |     28.16   |     71.61   |    42.71      |    78.11 while overall average and strike rate of Sachin is higher than his peers, he still increases them in final matches. And except in Chase avg column he is at top in all others columns. Yes, he failed in two WC finals but he still has scored 31, 53 in 2 WC QFs and 65, 83, 85 in 3 WC SFs. 2. Better away and fast bowling friendly wicket test record. Batsman | In Australia | In England | In South Africa | In Away Sachin    |       53.20     |       54.31     |         46.44        |   54.74  Ponting   |      58.95      |      41.79      |         46.85        |   45.81 Dravid     |      41.64      |      68.80      |         29.71        |   53.03 Lara        |      41.97      |      48.76      |         46.72        |   47.80 3. Better record against Australia(most dominating team during his time) Batsman | ODI avg | Test avg Sachin    |   44.59    |   57.30 Ponting   |   39.97    |   52.50   (instead of Aus. I have taken South Africa for him) Dravid     |   24.97    |   39.33 Lara        |   39.53    |   51.00 4. Longevity Spending more years with better records in comparison to Lara, Dravid, Ponting gives him a clear edge. 5. Approval from peers :), this is funny but it still matters a lot. Ricky Ponting :- Sachin is the best ever batsman in the world. He is brilliant in his technique. He is always hungry for runs. Sachin is better than Lara in his techniques thats why he is No.1 among others. On his day, Lara wiil be more destructive. He is the only man to fight for west indies. Jayasuriya also played great knocks for his team. But compared two them Sachin is the best. Rahul Dravid :- Playing in the same team as Sachin is a huge honour. His balance of mind, shrewd judgement, modesty and, above all, his technical brilliance make him my all-time hero... You can't get a more complete cricketer than Sachin. He has everything that a cricketer needs to have. Brian Lara :- Sachin is a genius , I am a mere mortal ! beside this almost all great bowlers like Warne, Mcgrath, Alan Donald consider him greatest of this generation. P.S. I have changed my opinion after doing some more research, and I think Bradman is really the all time greatest batsman. Sachin is 2nd.

If you want facts and figures, look at other answers, but to cut a long story short: Excellence and consistency over a long period of time. When your career spans several years, there is a lot to adapt to. Training, technology, techniques, styles - your own and your opponent's. It takes a special kind of person to conquer such dynamic challenges and continue performing at such a high level.

Because of his dedication to his game. By dedication,I mean that he always take himself as crickter inside the ropes. His 23 years of career,he never missed any series due to his bad attitude or discipline. He is very down to earth and always  maintain his relationships with his team mates. He played with lot of star players,he saw alot of palyers start playing after his debut and ends thier career.but he keeps playing good cricket.he keeps his attitude same towards his juniors.

The only challenge he has is to beat himself every time he walks out there because he has done almost everything – Kumar Sangakkara 94. This was expected. This is one of the finest achievements in cricket history. It is a fantastic performance by Sachin. Records do not matter to him. He will keep playing and records will follow him – Chandu Borde after Sachin completed his 50th Test ton 95. Putting Sachin Tendulkar’s latest feat in a strictly cricketing context would not be fair to the sportsman. His achievements in the world of cricket need to be seen on a par with efforts in any other field – science, art, literature, etc – to push the frontiers of human excellence – Pakistan daily ‘Dawn’ 96. Tendulkar is a world class player and a great ambassador for the game. As a youngster I watched the games and that’s where all my dreams started. You watch Tendulkar on TV and you think that I want to be like that one day – Graeme Smith 97. We had gone to see the movie Roja. I was studying medicine then and a couple of my friends planned. Sachin did try telling me that it would be difficult but I insisted that he come along. To make sure nobody recognised him we even got him a beard. He wore specs as well and we went in late. We watched the first half of the film. But during the interval, Sachin dropped his specs and people immediately recognised him. It was a bit of disaster and we were forced to leave halfway – Anjali Tendulkar couldn’t watch the second half of the movie with her better half 98. Actually, I have one particular spot in the house from where I can watch TV and also keep an eye on my Ganpati (Ganesha). I don’t eat. I don’t answer phones. I don’t drink. I don’t even move. I don’t reply to any sms until he’s out – Anjali Tendulkar’s routine when her husband is at the batting crease. 99. Maybe they all think it’s my last tour – Sachin Tendulkar whenever he gets a standing ovation 100.I don’t know cricket..i don’t know how Sachin plays..But i still try to watch him playing…B’coz i want to know the reason why my country’s economy goes 0.5% down when he is batting.. – Barack Obama tweet about Sachin Sachin Tendulkar, India’s ‘God of Cricket

He is the most complete batsman ever .....he plays every stroke with equal perfection.....he is equally good on both sides of the wicket ..you cannot just look at one stroke and say this is Sachin's best ..his strokes are just memorable be it he pull against Caddick  or the straight drives  against kasprowicz.....from the orthodox style of the 90's he has adapted his game to the modern style including the paddle sweeps and the upper cuts( he plays them better than anybody else) ..... and above all what separates the great from the very best is the humility ....no confrontations   no flambuoyancy......he always let his bat do the talking..... #Sachin the Greatest

No. He is no doubt one of the best, if you make an all-star team he would probably land the no.4 spot, but in no way is he the best of all time. You simply cannot make that kind of a claim because of the difference in conditions, players, etc. If you say he has scored against the best bowlers of the time, you give Shoaib Akhtar for pace, I give you Jeff Thompson. You give McGrath for accuracy, I give you Michael Holding and so on. If you say he has the most number of runs a man has ever scored. He is actually 7th on the list, he has only just crossed 50k while there are batsman who have crossed 60k.. If you say he had a long consistent career comprising of 24 years, look up W.G. Grace. At no time do I say Sachin isn't a great batsman, the best of the this era. But he is certainly not the best of all time.

Because the media says so, because there is money to be made in the racket. If you can digest some stats -- please look over - https://gurlivleen.quora.com/Sachin-the-Greatest-Beyond-the-halo-effect

It isnt true. He is certainly a fine batsman. Worldwide if you go back in time Bradman and Grace would probably be better. I don't even think he is the best Indian batsman. I would say I admire Sunil Gavaskar more for his leadership, which is an area Tendulkar never mastered Rahul Dravid was very adaptable plus had skills as a wicket-keeper.

Joe Geronimo Martinez

If not him, then who? He is certainly not above criticism but I can't think of any other batsman who has contributed as much to his team and to the sport in general, over a long period of time, across both formats of the game.

Harsh Bhageria

Its because he is a complete batsman unlike many of the greats. He can dominate and he can defend. He is the controller of his abilities which are themselves so supreme. Sachin has done very well against the best bowlers and best teams of his era,who were perhaps the greatest bunch in all time cricket history. His batsmanship is exemplary. Batting doesn't become more easier. Its been a privilege to have seen him bat!!!
