What is a good venue for a tech conference in Munich?

What are the best survival tips or hacks when attending a tech conference?

  • I am slightly shocked there is not already a Quora thread on this. What should I keep in mind before attending a tech conference. Question inspired by this post: http://www.ideaslaboratory.com/2012/11/09/top-10-things-to-do-at-a-tech-conference/

  • Answer:

The number one tip?  Hmm, after about 50 conventions under my belt I'd have to say having an extra cell phone battery would be the number 1 survival tip.   You are going to run out of juice.   It's a fact.  Coordinating the last couple of meetings/gatherings turns into an adventure if your phone is dead.        Don't let it happen to you. Having a hotel room in, or at least close to, the main event hotel (if its centered around a hotel) is probably #2.   It saves a ton of time and it usually it allows you to network more than you would if you were elsewhere. It's often worth the extra money.* Number 3 would be to try to arrange your meals in advance with people you'd like to meet with.  Number 4, which is related to #3, don't be afraid to stray away from the show if you are in good company.  Forget the Keynote or the end of day mixer!  The chance to solidify a relationship by sharing an experience with a small group in a foreign city almost always pays dividends down the line.  Often those people become great friends as well as great connections. *If the convention isn't hotel based, spend the extra money to stay at one of the better hotels near the convention center.  For example, in San Francisco there's a ton of action to be found at The W's Bar or The St. Regis's lobby lounge near the Moscone.

Become familiar with the conference participants, make a list of companies or people you're interested in speaking with. Get out of your comfort zone, network and talk to everyone. You could end up making really great contacts. Do a survey of the location for restaurants and hotels. You could probably find a better deal staying at a nearby hotel and get a better pulse of the city that way. Bring: Extra business cards, Chargers (cell phone, laptop)

Find out about any mobile app they might have created. It might seem tacky at first but they're usually great for, at the very least, organizing your schedule. Secondary benefits? You can usually network through them, meet other attendees, take part in competitions, submit surveys to win prizes, etc.
