Equally, or perhaps more, important are the following: 1) Technical skills: I've often said that it's easier to find a good accountant than it is to find a good bookkeeper. The issue is that bookkeeping is your typical good new/bad news story. The good news is that, because there's no restriction on that term, anyone can call themselves a bookkeeper. The bad news is that almost anyone, indeed, does. So, to me, a good bookkeeper needs solid technical skills. They need to understand debits and credits. They need to know the difference between cash and accrual accounting, and they need to know, at least at a basic level, how to read a balance sheet and a P&L. I'd also add that bookkeepers should be up to date on stuff like sales taxes. The problem I've seen is that all too many bookkeepers just don't have any technical skills. And it shows in their work. Another aspect of technical ability concerns the accounting system. A good bookkeeper will know how to use popular software like QuickBooks and AccountEdge. He or she will know how to record various types of transactions, will know how to find those transactions, and will also know how to produce the necessary reports to ensure that the accounts are in good order. This, to me, is very important. 2) Meticulousness: A good bookkeeper has to be a "details" person. This means that a good bookkeeper will make sure that the bank & credit card accounts reconcile, and that the transactions are posted to the proper accounts. A good bookkeeper is able to produce source documents, easily and quickly, for any transaction recorded in the books. All of which is to say, "flying by the seat of your pants" is not a recommended approach in bookkeeping. Hope this helps!
