What do you know about Carnegie Mellon?

What are some things companies should know about doing info sessions at CMU?

  • Answer:

Make it a technical talk, and advertise it as such! CMU students hear the same damn spiel from every startup about their fun corporate culture and "work hard play hard" philosophy. You can only differentiate yourself by teaching us something new or promising an inside look at a real engineering problem you're solving.

The best time to schedule it is 4:30pm. Classes are over and many students will still be on campus. Second choice is anytime after that, but students may be less likely to come back to campus for your talk. Don't schedule it at the same time as another employer looking at the same students. I know in the CS department, the liaison strongly advised against that. So schedule it pretty early. I believe Google sets up many of their talks a year in advance! In the CS department, there's a corporate liaison who will receive boxes for talks, help schedule, help communication to CS students, etc. I don't know if other departments have the same. Students will probably expect swag and/or food. Students will bring resumes—be ready to accept some! Bring more than just recruiters / "university specialists"—in fact, the best talks I went to the engineers did the talk and almost all student communication. It comes off way more authentic.
