What should I do if Ubuntu on VirtualBox is stuck in the bootup screen?
-
Please see this picture: I have been playing Ubuntu on VirtualBox for quite some time, but after I installed some applications, and tried to reboot again, it won't go to the comand line prompt. It's just stuck there(see the capture). I can SSH to system and perform various tasks, which means that it must be running okay, but how is it that it's just stuck there in the VirtualBox? What should I do about it? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated! P.S. : here is the log from dmesg: [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset [ 0.000000] Initializing cgroup subsys cpu [ 0.000000] Linux version 3.2.0-23-generic (buildd@crested) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu4) ) #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 (Ubuntu 3.2.0-23.36-generic 3.2.14) [ 0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-3.2.0-23-generic root=/dev/mapper/ubuntu-root ro [ 0.000000] KERNEL supported cpus: [ 0.000000] Intel GenuineIntel [ 0.000000] AMD AuthenticAMD [ 0.000000] Centaur CentaurHauls [ 0.000000] BIOS-provided physical RAM map: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009fc00 (usable) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 000000000009fc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000001fff0000 (usable) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 000000001fff0000 - 0000000020000000 (ACPI data) [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: 00000000fffc0000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) [ 0.000000] NX (Execute Disable) protection: active [ 0.000000] DMI 2.5 present. Answer:
When GRUB starts - can you get it to load in 'Fail Safe Mode'? If so -- choose that option in Grub and then as suggests -- uninstall postfix and sendmail. You could try and turn off those daemons / services, but it is probably easier to uninstall them and try again. I have trouble believing they are the root of your issue, but if that was the last change - then start there. From reading the comments, it is not clear to me if the VBox Guest is SSH-able or if it is the Host machine that is SSH-able. If you can SSH to the Guest, you can uninstall from there and tell it to reboot (without doing the Fail Safe thing).
