How do I create a Joomla template from scratch? What all do I need to know to be able to do it?

    Take a pre made template like beez-20 and strip it down to the minimum div skeleton with the joomla php code still intact, then build from there

This is a bit obvious but, first thing first : http://docs.joomla.org/Creating_a_basic_Joomla!_template Then you can take a look at the default templates that come with Joomla official releases. It's in {joomla_home}/templates/. folder. Open beez_20/index.php and play around with it. That's a good start.

Or just get up and running with an alternative hosting and template service like square space (not based on joomla).
