Answer:
Houston is a great city. It has its flaws, but I am proud to call it home. Without reservation I can say that Muslims feel very safe here, and have access to a wide variety of amenities. I have lived in Texas since 1982, and Houston since 1993. As a Muslim I have never felt unwelcome here. The Islamic Society of Greater Houston bills itself as the largest Muslim organization in North America. It operates 17 masjids and full time Islamic schools. They have had some problems with hiring a few terrible Imams, but on the whole it is a great organization. There are also several independent mosques that cater to specific sects. A few Muslims have become extremely prominent. MJ Khan was elected to the city council a few times, Farrukh Shamsi ran for governor, etc. We have an entire part of town that serves Zabiha meat, etc. You could live in some parts of the southwest and never speak English if thats your thing. Outside of ISGH, organizations like Risala and the Muslim Professional Association host a lot of great programming that are very enriching. My largest warning would be to avoid suburbs like Katy that have anti-Muslim tendencies, hosting pig races to protest Mosque openings. Sugar Land, despite having a large Muslim population, had a Congressman that would mock Muslim names on the House floor (he has since retired) and speak at Islamaphobic Churches etc. If you want to wear hijab/niqab I would not recommend living in those places. I am only recommending Houston. Muslim life here is good but not as good as some places. I have family in Stockholm, Rotterdam, London and rest of UK and all over Canada. I would rate countries by friendliness to Islam as Sweden, UK, Canada, Netherlands, USA. Community here is large but there is no Islamic school so my children go to public school where they get much Western influence whereas in Stockholm my nieces and nephews dont have to interact with others as they have Islamic school. Also benefits in Houston very low but in Europe especially Sweden it is easily to live off of. However Houston is very cheap so quality of life is high. I have four daughters ages 3, 5, 6 and 7 and all wears hijab and wife wears niqab and they have been taunted before by racists. One thing which never happens to my family in Europe. Also Houston is very very humid and hot so niqab uncomfortable to my wife. I suggest to join Islamic Society of Greater Houston which is very active and large so gives us strong social life http://isgh.org. Very many mosques in Houston, I go to Masjid ElFarouq which is close to home so I can make salah 5 times http://www.elfarouq.org/ . Very many halal restaurants. Overall I think Houston is ok but soon I think I will move to Stockholm as I see my children adapting to Western ways here and I think it is unavoidable here. So i suggest to get a sponsor for Stockholm or UK and go there instead. More benefit from government and stronger communities.
