  • Answer:

The META Description tag is in a weird place right now... It's getting constantly labeled as "not being used by search engines" or "ignored by search engines," but that's not entirely accurate. The META Description tag is still used by Google and others to determine your description in organic results (although, sometimes Google can change this if it likes), but Google and many others don't really read what's in the copy as a method of determining the page's relevance and thus rank in organic results.  Google and others also use it to determine duplicate content issues, so make sure each page has a separate and unique META Description tag. Don't sweat keywords so much as making sure that the copy is for human readers, so make it interesting, enticing, and informative. You should try to include your keyword targets for a given page, but it should happen naturally. The META Keywords tag is now pretty much useless for anything except keeping track of your keyword targets.  Google looks at it really only to see if you're abusing it, so don't try and stuff terms in here. Good luck.

Hi. Meta tags are no longer used as factors for determining a site's ranking. Google still uses meta description tags though as text display that appear on search results. It's more for the users than for the search engines. It's still highly recommended to optimize both the title and description tags with the keywords you are trying to rank for to show users exactly what your content is all about even before clicking on your site's link on the search results page. Use the meta description tag as way to sort of entice your target readers to read your content. The keyword meta tag is ignored by the search engines for couple of years now...the heading tags, titke, description is of importance.... and do not use a keyword more than two times in a single meta tag otherwise search engines consider them as index spamming.Headings tags<h1> are another important tags that the search engines look for.

I agree pretty much with Jeff however, from an SEO perspective it is also important to have a compelling yet relevant meta description for each page. If you don't have one Google will pull something from the copy dynamically and it may not 'sell the click' to the user. When the user makes a search it will create an impression on the results shown. If the user does or does not click on your site this has an effect on your CTR (Click through Rate). Having good meta descriptions sells your site in the SERPs and a good CTR can be a ranking factor. Conversely though a bad or irrelevant meta description may sell the click but when a user reaches your site and isn't happy that the site isn't what they expected they will leave immediately. This will increase your bounce rate. Another ranking factor! So while a search engine may not actually rank you based solely on it. It may a have an effect on your rankings in different ways.

Meta Tags used to get much attention from the search engine, on the whole they are now considered as not so important element for the website. But there are some meta tags which still affects your ranking a lot and this include Title and Description. If your name and description meta tags are well written then it can be useful for you an extent.

Meta tags are very useful to inform the definition of the web page to the search engine crawlers and Keyword and description, both are important for the SEO point of view because it tells the search engine about the webpage that what it is going to deliver. In the context of Keyword, I can say that this is very much important tag with respect to SEO and description is also much important because it describe our website in search results.
